BAWSI Pilots Soccer-specific Programming in East San Jose
Thanks to a grant from the US Soccer Foundation, BAWSI Soccer was born at Katherine Smith Elementary in the fall semester. 2 nd  through 6 th  grade girls from the school and the surrounding neighborhood, including Valley Palms Apartments, participated in this free skill-building and leadership development programming, held twice a week over seven weeks. 1 st  time player, Cali, told us, “If I pay attention in soccer, I can learn more about soccer, and I can do the same thing in the classroom.” BAWSI Soccer parent shared, “It is important because she has more motivation."
Coming Soon: BAWSI Game Days
February is the month we celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, and what better way to do that than taking BAWSI Girls to college campuses to experience a women’s sporting event! We will be taking BAWSI Girls participants to Santa Clara University, San Jose State University and Stanford University to participate in pregame activities before watching the respective women’s basketball teams take on an opponent.
Playground Volunteers Rock!
The fall season of programming had support from 427 volunteer appearances amounting to 547 total volunteer hours! If you’re interested in getting involved as a volunteer at one of our 16 BAWSI playgrounds, let us know and contact  bawsi@bawsi.org!
Bellarmine Volunteers Help our BAWSI Rollers
Bellarmine College Prep joined us on the playground this fall for eight weeks with our BAWSI Rollers. Initially cheering on our Rollers and pushing wheelchairs on the playground, they graduated to taking charge of games and encouraging the Special Education students. Every week, the boys brought energy, enthusiasm, and made the fall season unforgettable! We are excited to continue this impactful partnership with Bellarmine College Prep!
Thanks to the support of Applied Materials, BAWSI received a Generation Girl grant of $40,000 to help fund our Girls Leadership Accelerator program!    Generation Girl™, an initiative of the Applied Materials Foundation, was created to inspire today’s generation of girls to pursue their dreams. We are part of a learning co-hort and look forward to sharing challenges and opportunities with other grantees.

Community Spotlight on NCL
Whether volunteering at BAWSI events or providing snack bags for BAWSI participants or many other valuable roles, our local NCL chapters are loyal, enthusiastic supporters whom we regularly depend upon.  We are grateful to work alongside this amazing group.

The NCL Program is an organization comprised of mothers and their daughters serving communities together in a program that embraces Community Service, Leadership Development and Cultural Experiences. A big BAWSI thank you to the Saratoga-Los Gatos Chapter and Orchard Valley Chapter for your dedication to our programs!
BAWSI Goes to Indonesia
BAWSI co-CEO Jennifer Smith travelled to Indonesia this past September as a guest of the US State Department’s Sports Visitor program. Three small cities and four madrasas in the mountains of West Java played host to our sports ambassador. Jennifer conducted coaching workshops for coaches, and worked directly with the young girls in the communities, many of whom were playing for the first time.
Other Ways to Support BAWSI
