Welcome to E-Connect
Happy Tuesday!

We are back with another riveting installment of E-Connect. Fall is one of our favourite seasons at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare. It's the season when, nearly 130 years ago our organization was established, and then again, five years ago when Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare was born. Not to mention, fall is the time when our organization is filled with life, activities, advancements, and events!

Continue on to read about all of these things and more.

Our Patients
Extending Withdrawal Management Services into our community
Typically, when an individual battling an addiction decides to set forth on the road to recovery, they are required to pack up their things and spend time withdrawing in an institutional setting. In Windsor, one of those settings is Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare’s Withdrawal Management Services program.

Our 20 bed, non-medical, co-located men and women’s facility has helped hundreds of residents safely withdrawal from drugs and/or alcohol.

Making the decision to ‘get clean’ is a huge one, and for some, the thought of withdrawing in an unfamiliar place is intimidating or unrealistic.

To help make recovery more obtainable, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare is proud to have officially launched our Community Withdrawal Management program this past June.

The program, gives those in our community, aged 16 or older, the option to withdraw from drugs or alcohol in the comfort of their own home or in another safe, supportive environment.

With guidance from a full team of male and female Chemical Dependency Counsellors, Certified Canadian Addiction Counsellors, GAIN Administrators and Trainers, and Acudetox-Certified staff, the program helps clients with pre-withdrawal planning, active withdrawal monitoring, achieving stabilization, aftercare, and more. The program also includes a full-time Chemical Dependency Counsellor based in Leamington in order to support our efforts of making addiction treatment more accessible in Leamington and surrounding areas.

In the few short months that the program has been in operation, our team has already assisted 52 clients in the community with positive results.

Just like our traditional Withdrawal Management program, any one can make a referral to the program, including self-referrals. For more information on the program, including how to contact us, please visit our website.

Recently, our Community Withdrawal Management Team has been spreading the word about the program at Recovery Day Windsor and the Health and Wellness Expo. Be sure to keep an eye out for the team at future events to learn more about this invaluable service.
Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare's Regional Children's Centre expands Walk-In Clinic hours
As of October 1st, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare’s Regional Children’s Centre has expanded the hours of its Mental Health Walk-In Counselling Clinic from three to five days a week to better serve the mental health needs of children and youth in Windsor-Essex.

RCC’s Walk-In Counselling Clinic is located in the Albert Huot Building (3901 Connaught) and provides quick access to mental health services for children, youth and their families up to the age of 18.

Expanded Hours of Operation are:
Monday – Thursday 12:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. (last client check-in at 6:00 p.m.)
Fridays 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (last client check-in at 2:30 p.m.)

This expansion of services now includes walk-in times on Wednesday and Thursday as well as an additional two hours on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

No new staff were hired to accommodate the expanded hours, but instead a shift of workload occurred as our dedicated staff at RCC recognized the need to expand this much needed service to children and youth in our community.

Although a step in the right direction, work continues in advancing child and youth mental health to the front of government agendas, advocating for increase funding, reduction of wait-times and that our kids can’t wait for these crucial, life-changing services. As Lead Agency in Child and Youth Mental Health and in our continued work in becoming a Centre of Excellence in Mental Health, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare Leadership will continue to advocate for this important sector of mental health services.

For more information on the RCC Walk-In Counselling Clinic, or if you know a child or youth who could benefit from this service please visit the RCC Services Page on our website.
Our People
A special place to visit
A bench. To the average person, a bench is just a temporary place to sit, to relax, or to take in the scenery around you.

For Maria (Simone) Gabriele, a Dietary Helper with our Food and Nutrition Services team, one particular bench at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare is the special place where she gets to spend time with her Mom.

It was six years ago that Maria lost her Mom after a courageous battle with cancer, but her presence can still be felt.

Maria’s Mom, Maria Antonia (Tonina) Simone, loved helping others and was a passionate member of the Catholic Women’s League at St. Angela Merici Church. For many years, Maria also volunteered tirelessly at our organization, finding joy spending time with our patients as she assisted them with their meals and brought them to different events around campus. Volunteering was her happy place.

“She was a great person. A kind, loving, caring, beautiful soul. We miss her terribly,” Maria says through tears.

Upon her passing, her family knew that commemorating her in a special way at the place that she loved was very much appropriate. And so, they purchased an engraved plaque to go with that special bench that sits in front of our Dr. Fouad Tayfour Regional Rehabilitation Centre, overlooking one of our courtyards that is filled with flowers.

Unfortunately, the metal plaque on Maria’s and all other benches throughout the grounds of Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare had to be removed after a safety concern late last year. Maria, understandably, was devastated that the place where she spends a few minutes with her Mom on each of her breaks didn’t have that special commemoration for her Mom anymore.

After thorough research and testing, the plaques have since been replaced with a weather-proof, safe, and beautifully branded decal.

From this new and improved bench, Maria can relax, take in the flowers, and watch the comings and goings of Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, all while thinking of the wonderful person who was her Mom, Maria Antonia Simone.

We would like to thank all who have purchased an engraved plaque for benches throughout our campus for your patience and understanding during this transition.
