What's Happening at CUNY

image

It’s fall, y’all: CUNY began the academic year by welcoming more than 250 full-time faculty and new leaders at three schools. Read all the news, and check out some fun move-in day photos.

This CUNY is home to “diverse, talented and passionate” students who are being trained to have a substantial impact on their chosen field and, writes our Chancellor, advancing the public good.

One college is growing the next generation of urban farmers with a new curriculum, paid internship program and USDA partnership.

A student returned to finish his degree at the CUNY campus where he started 25 years ago, joining his daughter who now attends the same school.

This CUNY’s unique new resource center will provide mentorship, career counseling and other transformative opportunities for Black and Latino male students.

Known for walking every block of New York City, this beloved CUNY prof lost his life early in the COVID-19 pandemic. His just-published final book chronicles the 800 blocks he explored in the Bronx and includes the rich Jewish history he uncovered.

CUNY students get discounted tickets to The Armory Show, New York’s high-profile art fair held at the Javits Center from Sept. 8-10. Use promo code CUNY23 to get the discounted $28 tickets (normally $35).

This CUNY alum, the all-time leading scorer in his college’s men’s basketball program, just signed a deal to play professionally in Germany.

A one-of-a-kind collaborative video game design course — which doubles as a paid internship — gives students the directive to “Just make stuff.”

Important Announcements

Need food assistance? We have food pantries available year-round at CUNY and you don’t need to be eligible for government benefits to take advantage. Here’s the full list of CUNY food pantries; any CUNY student can use any pantry, but make sure to confirm the hours ahead of time.

Attend CUNY tuition-free! Apply for the Excelsior Scholarship by August 31.

There is now a centralized online portal for members of our community to report instances of discrimination and retaliation on campuses.

CUNY Callouts

Alyssa Castillano, Queens College ’24, is an Afro-Caribbean web developer and web designer. A computer science major, she hopes to use her skills to help small businesses boldly and creatively market themselves online. She also wants to create software tools that streamline the process of fashion design and teach digital literacy skills to the youth in her community. Alyssa interned as a web developer with CUNY’s Office of Communications and Marketing, where she had the chance to be part of a group that greeted Vice President Kamala Harris at LaGuardia Airport last spring. She now works at global asset management firm T. Rowe Price as a software engineering intern.

Ayesha’s best advice: “Be not afraid of going slowly. Be afraid of standing still. Slowly is the fastest way.”
