Welcome to Foothill!

Greetings!

Welcome to the Honors Institute. We are excited to start the new academic year! We are Sam Connell and Tracee Cunningham. You are either new to honors and Foothill, or you already know the drill and just need updates and reminders. You may even be a professor who wants to teach honors or someone in the community who just wants more info. It's all good friends.

There is an honors orientation for Foothill College students and their families to learn more about the different opportunities through the Honors Institute. It will be Thursday at 5pm on Zoom. Check out the zoom link on the website.

Come learn about:

Here is a link to our slide show in case you missed this or other orientation.
The mission of the Foothill College Honors Institute is to nurture student growth by cultivating intellectual curiosity, fostering educational aspirations, and promoting engagement through an inclusive community dedicated to scholarly excellence and social consciousness.

The Foothill College Honors Institute is dedicated to advancing equity in education for all and our courses are open to the general public.

We do not require a separate program application to enroll in honors courses. Unless there is a prerequisite, students can enroll in honors courses through the regular registration process through https://myportal.fhda.edu.

Please visit https://foothill.edu/honors or e-mail us at honors@foothill.edu for additional information about the program.
Who are we?

We are Tracee and Sam

Tracee: I've been a counselor at Foothill College since 2015 and I love working with community college students. They have always had a special place in my heart since I was a transfer student myself. I've worked with the Umoja learning community at Foothill from 2016-2021 and now I am excited to work within the Honors community helping students navigate this exciting time in their lives while on the path to self-discovery and higher education.
Ask me about study abroad sometime in our counseling sessions and I'll talk your ear off about the benefits of that experience. I love to travel and I highly recommend studying, interning or working abroad for a semester or a year. Stop by and visit me during honors drop-in hours. https://foothill.edu/honors/ I look forward to meeting you all soon.

Sam: I am an archaeologist who studies in Ecuador, Belize, California, Ireland and now Hawaii. My interests are in the rise of complexity in societies and narratives surrounding colonization and resistance. I am also currently heavily involved with public and applied anthropology. Every summer we bring field classes of 30 students to field sites to take in active ongoing research projects. Students in Ireland spend a month focusing on late medieval castles in communities and in Ecuador they continue our amazing research on Inca fortifications. Last summer we also went to Hawaii to help Native Hawaiian groups study and revitalize their fishponds and traditional farming practices. It was amazing! Check out the Foothill Anthro website.
Start thinking about those applications this week!

Newsflash -- UC TAG applications are due this Friday! See link here.

Due dates for applications for applications are fast approaching. It is time to get your ducks in a row. Think about meeting one of us to make sure you get started on the writing components. It is great to have people like us to look at what you have written and help you edit.
