Welcome to the Georgetown Lombardi Arts & Humanities Program (AHP) newsletter. In this week's issue, we welcome new artist-in-residence Jody Marshall, discuss the Day That Music Cares brought to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital from the local D.C. Grammy Chapter, and share a movement video from artist-in-residence Deborah Riley.

A Warm Welcome to Artist-in-Residence,

Jody Marshall

Jody Marshall is a native of Washington, D.C. She grew up hearing her family play a wide array of music, but Jody had never heard the enchanting tones of the hammered dulcimer until one fateful day at a local folk festival. It was love at first sound!

Enchanted by the sound and visual appeal of the hammered dulcimer, Jody developed a passion for the instrument. When she finally got a dulcimer of her own, she started playing everything from traditional Celtic and American music to Mozart, the Beatles, and beyond.

Jody is a recent graduate of the Music for Healing and Transition Program (MHTP), and is now a certified therapeutic musician. She completed her practicum at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and is thrilled to be able to continue working with patients and staff as an artist-in-residence with the Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities Program.

The Day That Music Cares

The Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities program collaborated with the DC Chapter of the Recording Academy to bring The Day That Music Cares to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. The Day That Music Cares brings the music community together to volunteer in in charities, local organizations, and causes across the country.

At MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, The Day Music Cares volunteers performed in various areas of the hospital, including the Verstandig Pavilion, to the delight of patients, staff, and caregivers.

President of the DC Chapter of the Recording Academy, Tamara Wellons discusses the origins of The Day That Music Cares in a Hospital Setting:

"Hello,

I am Tamara Wellons, the current President of the DC Chapter of the Recording Academy.

The Day that Music Cares is a dedicated day of service organized by MusiCares®, music's leading charity. It is a day where musicians, studio engineers, talent managers, vocalists, executives, promoters volunteer in their respective communities.

The Day That Music Cares unites the music community's culture of connection and the transformative power of giving back.

When I introduced the opportunity for musicians to connect with hospitals through the Musicians in Healthcare Network, the DC Chapter board members for this committee thought it was a unique and great way to serve. Many voting members have previously shown interest in music for healthcare, so this was the perfect opportunity to both act on their interest and do it for a cause."

Take time for yourself and for self-care by participating in this movement video offered by artist-in-residence Deborah Riley. Deborah uses the qigong practice of tapping into your life-force. Tapping has been shown to be an effective way to relieve stress and energize the body.

The Georgetown Lombardi Arts & Humanities Program (AHP) promotes a holistic approach to healthcare for patients, caregivers, physicians, nurses, staff members, and students through the use of music, dance, expressive writing, and visual arts. These therapeutic modalities are normally provided throughout the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and online through Eventbrite courses. The AHP is a program of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
