Celebrating this event virtually or with the people you live with is the safest choice; however, if you do gather with people who do not live with you, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends holding gatherings and activities outdoors rather than indoors.

Community Recreation Operational Schedule for Memorial Day, May 31, is as follows:
  • Granada Golf Course: 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • Salvadore Tennis Center and William H. Kerdyk Biltmore Tennis Centers: 7 a.m. - 9 p.m.
  • Venetian Pool: 11 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
  • War Memorial Youth Center: CLOSED to the public, but it will hold an in-person Memorial Day Ceremony, at 9 a.m.
  • Adult Activity Center: CLOSED
National Kids to Parks Day

May 15, 2021
Join us in celebrating the 11th Annual Kids to Parks Day by visiting your favorite Coral Gables park.
The National Park Trust’s #MyParkMyWhy campaign encourages park goers to visit and share their love for their local Parks. Take a picture of your favorite feature or moment at your local park and tag us @CoralGablesParks #MyParkMyWhy.  
Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony at the War Memorial Youth Center 

Please join the City of Coral Gables in honoring the men and women who gave their lives in service protecting our nation’s freedom. The ceremony will include the Honor Guard’s Changing of the Colors, poem readings, and a name reading of our fallen soldiers followed by light refreshments. 
Monday, May 31 at 9 a.m.

Gables Literacy Festival – A New Coral Gables Family Event

Embark on a literacy journey and join us under the Youth Center tree canopy at 405 University Drive for a daylong celebration and book fair on Saturday, May 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. In an effort to promote summer reading and the literary arts the festival will provide a unique experience for all ages and abilities and include the following:
  • Outdoor Scholastic Book Fair for ages k-8
  • Literacy vendors and screenings
  • Food trucks
  • Petting zoo
  • Photobooth
  • Magical Park AR Game
  • Crafts and Storytime

Swim Lessons at Venetian Pool

Learn to swim at the Venetian Pool this summer with our certified Red Cross Venetian Aquatic Club volunteers. Classes start June 14 and are offered in 2-week sessions (Monday – Friday) for ages 5-years-old and above. Participants will have the opportunity to learn swimming fundamentals and place according to their skill level. The program offers the following six progressive levels:    
Level I: Introduction to water skills.
Level II: Fundamental Aquatic skills. 
Level III: Stroke Development.
Level IV: Stroke Improvement.
Level V: Stroke Refinement.
Level VI: Stroke Proficiency.

Become a certified lifeguard in just one week at the Venetian Pool
2701 De Soto Blvd., Coral Gables

The Venetian Pool is offering a community lifeguard certification course where students will learn valuable lifesaving skills and get hands-on training from experienced lifeguard instructors.
Program Prerequisites:
  • 200-yard swim without stopping using.
  • Freestyle or Breaststroke.
  • 2-minute tread with hands above the water.
  • Ten-pound brick retrieval from 8 ft. deep.

Travel Soccer Try-Outs at the War Memorial Youth Center.
405 University Drive, Coral Gables

To participate in Travel Soccer at the War Memorial Youth Center, players must participate in try-outs to be considered for team selections. Try-outs require advanced registration for boys and girls ages 8 - 13-years-old at playgables.com under "Athletics". The travel soccer program provides young players the opportunity to participate in competitive and recreational play. Try-outs require the use of a face mask at all times. The Adult Activity Center is scheduled to reopen this week for in-person registration and Tuesday May 11 for limited programming.

In anticipation of the Adult Activity Center’s soft reopening, our team is thrilled to announce the new AAC Access Pass, which will provide contactless check-in, capacity control and quick priority registration opportunities. The Access Pass will be required for all patrons of the AAC to register for any class, program or special event. An active household/account with the Community Recreation Department is required. Pilates in the Park at the historic Merrick House

Join us for Pilates in the Park starting Friday, May 14 for Gables residents 50+. Classes will take place outdoors in the shady Merrick House garden located on 907 Coral Way. Participants must bring their own mat, water, towel, and face mask. Space is limited.

Get ready to dance the afternoons away with new Line Dance classes starting Friday, May 14. Classes will take place at the Coral Gables Museum. Participants must bring their own water and face mask. Space is limited.
Love to Stay Healthy and Fit 

The Adult Activity Center continues to offer a series of monthly Zoom fitness classes for adults ages 50+ that will help you stay healthy and fit. Free classes such as Pilates, line dance, life in motion, total body conditioning, Zumba, chair tai chi, and body and brain yoga are available daily.

Another new neighborhood park in Coral Gables is Sarto Green Park, Located at 241 Sarto Ave. This beautiful green space offers the perfect location to enjoy the outdoors surrounded by nature. The focal point of this park is a glossy privet tree (Ligustrum lucidum) encircled by a lovely circular steel bench. In this cozy corner of Coral Gables, you’ll find oolite stone blocks for sitting and other oolite stone boulders that create a natural element for kids to climb and play. Punctuating the open lawn is a native Gumbo Limbo tree selected to create shade and provide natural habitat for birds and wildlife. Other plantings that attract birds and butterflies include wild coffee, Brazilian cloak, locust berry, coontie, and Florida slash pine trees.
Save the Date for the reopening of the Jaycee Park Playground on Saturday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. 
1230 Hardee Road, Coral Gables
 
Following several community input meetings and modifications to the playground design, the Jaycee Park neighborhood will get to enjoy the items on their wish list for this park, with an updated playground that now provides more shade, adventurous play, accessible safety surfacing, and a cool-down station right in time for summer play. The playground is currently still closed pending safety inspections and punch-list items. The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 8, at Jaycee Park, on 1230 Hardee Road. This event will be followed by the formal reopening of the park's playground. For additional information on park projects, and the Jaycee reopening ceremony please email parksprojects@coralgables.com. 
We are building beautiful to bring you a new inclusive playground at Salvadore Park

Construction has started on the southern side of Salvadore Park to enhance the existing park with the City’s first inclusive playground. A partial closure is currently in effect in the open play area and includes the closure of the park's restrooms. A full closure of the park is expected to follow after the existing playground is scheduled for replacement. Congratulations to our new and renewing Lifeguard Instructors at the Venetian Pool

The City of Coral Gables had the privilege of hosting its first Jeff Ellis & Associates South Florida regional instructor class at the Venetian Pool. We are proud to recognize our newest graduating team of instructors, who will be responsible for teaching and certifying this summer’s life safety team. The Venetian Pool and its lifeguards have been awarded the prestigious Platinum International Aquatic Safety Award for the last seven consecutive years, a recognition presented by Jeff Ellis & Associates to only the top ten percent in the world for consistently exceeding in aquatic safety and for offering the highest degree in swimmer protection.
