First Generation Facts

  • More than 40% of students in college are first-generation college students.
  • A higher percentage of first-generation than continuing-generation students used financial aid services.

To be considered first gen, students must

  • Have parents never enrolled in post-secondary education
  • Parents have not earned any post-secondary degree
  • Parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree

We include graduate students and international students as part of our first-gen community.*

NS Firsts Goals

The committee has identified 3 main goals for its reestablishment:

  • Enhance a sense of belonging for incoming and continuing undergraduate First-Gen students at the university.
  • Identify First-Gen staff and faculty to build a community of role models/mentors and collaborators to assist in executing programs for students.
  • Create a microsite that houses information for the First-Gen population which includes support for navigating the university, financial literacy, and post-secondary opportunities.

We want to hear from you.....

As a committee, we believe that the voices of our students directly matter the most. We are interested in creating a Student-led Work Group catered to ensuring that all NS Firsts programming efforts align with the needs and wants of students. Are you interested in being a leader for your first gen community? Please fill out the form below.
