A Message from Our President
This past year marked The Angeletti Group's 15th year of service to nonprofits. We have grown from our early days as a small consulting firm to one of the leading philanthropic resources in the country, increasing not only in size but also in depth, breadth of experience and client base. We have sought out change -- within our organization and throughout the industry on the whole, as well in the world.

As we welcome Spring 2022, I take this moment to reflect on the accomplishments of our team and our client partners--especially during the last two turbulent years. Around this time two years ago, we could never have imagined our current reality. And yet, one thing that has remained true throughout my decades of work with nonprofits: philanthropy is resilient. Donors are committed, fundraisers are inventive, and organizations are adaptable to changing situations. We've seen our clients face some of their toughest challenges over the last two years, but we've also seen them make some of the most impressive strides. From working with lean staffs, to finding new ways to get the job done, to launching unprecedented campaigns, the organizations we work with across the country have persevered. And -- reflecting on 15 years of perseverance -- all of us at TAG are proud to have played a role in so many important missions and achievements.

Change is progress, and I'm excited to announce new, positive changes at TAG this year. As you will read below, we relocated two of our regional offices in New Jersey and Connecticut. We also recruited new team members with unique expertise and launched new service lines, such as the Planned Giving Launch Pad. Last month, we met in person as a full firm for the first time since 2020 to come together for professional development, networking, and sharing of advice and expertise across our client projects, some of which you can read about below.

We look forward to our next 15 years of service to those who serve. We are excited about the accomplishments we will witness and participate in alongside our incredible client partners who are making a difference in every corner of the world.

Fordham Prep Raises $75 Million with Igniting Our Mission Campaign

In the Fall of 2021, Fordham Prep hosted an event to celebrate the success of it’s Igniting Our Mission campaign and dedicate some of the new spaces the campaign helped to create.
 
"Igniting our Mission has expanded our physical space, curriculum offerings and tuition assistance and has strengthened the Annual Fund and the Endowment through a strategic vision that ensures that a Fordham Prep education, steeped in faith, scholarship and service continues to thrive on Rose Hill for years to come,” Fordham Prep's President Rev. Christopher J. Devron, SJ said during his remarks on November 7th. 

The dedication featured a few of the newly renovated spaces made possible by campaign donations, including the Rowen Lobby (gift of Diane and James Rowen ‘82), Classroom 217 (gift of Sean and Julie O’Shea P'14', '17, '20), the Adlerman Makerspace Lab (gift of Edwin J. Adlerman ‘89), the Counseling Center (gift of the Brusco family), and the Chapel of St. Ignatius Loyola (gift of the McCarthy family P‘17, ‘19 and the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation).

Funds raised during the campaign have had an impact on all aspects of the student experience at Fordham Prep.

St. Michael's College Receives $1 Million Gift in Support of Career Services

Antonietta “Toni” Boucher honored her late husband, Henry “Bud” Boucher, Jr., with a gift of $1 million which will support the institution’s Career Education Center. Mr. Boucher (pictured here) passed away in January 2021.
 
The Career Education Center long has been an integral part of the student experience at Saint Michael’s, offering comprehensive career readiness training throughout each student’s four years. “With this transformative gift, the College will be able to enhance and expand career services available to students and cement a main pillar of the school’s current strategic plan, Forward with Purpose,” Saint Michael’s President Lorraine Sterritt said.

Project ALS Launches Promising New Drug into Clinical Trial

TAG is honored to be working with Project ALS, a NYC non-profit that recently launched the promising new drug prosetin into clinical trials. A neurodegenerative disease that targets the motor neurons that send messages to muscles throughout the body, ALS is usually fatal within 2-5 years of diagnosis as a person progressively loses the ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe.

Over the past two decades, Project ALS has had critical breakthroughs in its search for a cure. In 2019 they launched the Project ALS Therapeutics Core at Columbia University (the Core) -- the world’s first and only partnership between a world-class academic institution and a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to ALS drug development, preclinical evaluation, and human clinical trials. In under three years, the Core has developed a novel oral, brain penetrant compound known as prosetin, optimized another hopeful molecule called kenpaullone into soluble, brain-penetrant, neuroprotective compounds, and developed next-generation, patient-specific model systems to assess promising therapies efficiently.

Most recently, Project ALS created ProJenX, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company tasked with developing future ALS drug candidates. Last Fall, ProJenX raised $5.1 million in seed financing to recruit management and fund development of prosetin through Phase I clinical trials, which began in February of 2022.

Project ALS is a leader in innovative exploration, and its intense focus on the future pipeline of emerging compounds as they come to market will continually provide new therapeutic tools and ultimately find a cure for ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. 
Pennington School Announces Naming of Endowed Faculty Chair

for Community Life
This named position recognizes a newly established fund created by Brenda Martini O’loughlin P’19, a member of Pennington’s Board of Trustees. The inaugural holder of the named endowed chair is Chad Bridges ‘96. 

The new endowment fund will be used to expand and deepen the School's professional development initiatives, compensation and mentorship programs, residential housing options, and other faculty-related priorities identified as part of Pennington’s strategic plan.

Murrieta Welcomes Acclaimed Nonprofit Canine Support Teams 

After 30 years headquartered in Menifee, Canine Support Teams (CST), a longstanding nonprofit in Southern California, is excited to announce its relocation to a new and more spacious facility in Murrieta.
 
Canine Support Teams provides service dogs to individuals with disabilities, including those with Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Cystic Fibrosis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and those with limited mobility. Additionally, CST has maintained a strong connection to the veteran community and proudly provides service dogs to veterans free of charge. Through a generous donation, CST has the privilege of operating its facility on a beautiful 7+ acre property at 24480 Jenny Lane. This sprawling location provides significantly more room for CST service dogs-in-training to exercise and play, as well as a designated area for training and testing.

This strategic move will enable the organization to train and place more service dogs than ever before. Clients across the county who receive a CST service dog are given the life-changing gift of personal, social, and occupational independence.

Fairleigh Dickinson University Names New Provost

Effective January 1, 2022, Michael Avaltroni has been named FDU’s new University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Alvatroni has been serving as dean of FDU’s School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for nearly a decade.
 
“Dr. Avaltroni is a well-respected and longtime colleague and leader in FDU’s academic community, bringing to the University’s top academic position an excellent record of academic achievement and program development, a comprehensive understanding of FDU’s multifaceted university operations, and a wonderful reputation as a thoughtful and dynamic educator, administrator, and leader,” said FDU President Christopher A. Capuano.

Avaltroni was one of the principal architects of the formation of the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences as well, as he had earlier served as executive associate dean and associate dean for academic affairs for the school. He also served FDU as chairperson of the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences earlier in his career.
A proud FDU alumnus, Avaltroni earned his BS in chemistry from FDU, and then earned an MA and PhD in chemistry from Princeton University.

Brookgreen Gardens Celebrates 90th Anniversary

Brookgreen Gardens’ 90th anniversary celebration continues with an exhibition dedicated to the work of its founder Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973). Even the most serious art devotees are forgiven for being unaware of the considerable significance of the garden, the first public sculpture garden in the country, or of Huntingdon, one of the most successful sculptors in America–regardless of gender–in the early 20th century.

News from Oratory Prep

Oratory Prep is successfully building a bridge to a better future! The School's Bridge to the Future Campaign recently passed the $2.2M mark toward their phase one goal of $3M. TAG has served as Oratory's Campaign Counsel since 2021 and Development Counsel since 2018 and looks forward to helping the School cross the finish line of this important campaign.

Additionally, Oratory's 24-hour Rally for the Rams event on March 3, 2022 was a huge success! The day-long giving event celebrated Oratory's founding, continued growth and future and raised funds to support the most pressing needs of the School. This year's event saw increased participation and total giving of over $114,000 in just one day!

TAG Welcomes Ken Cole and the Planned Giving Launch Pad

TAG is pleased to welcome Ken Cole as senior counsel, Gift Planning. After 35 years in higher education and healthcare, Ken Cole brought his expertise in campaigns, planned giving, and public relations to The Angeletti Group. Before joining, he served more than 16 years at Overlook Foundation in Summit, NJ, where he oversaw the planned giving program and the first three years of a $175 million campaign for Overlook Medical Center. He previously led a successful $100 million campaign to celebrate the hospital’s centennial in 2006.

Prior to Overlook, he served as Assistant Vice President for major gifts at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt hospitals in New York City and earlier as Director of Planned Giving and Campaigns at the Foundation for Morristown (NJ) Medical Center. There he both led a campaign that doubled the size of the cancer center and reinvigorated the foundation’s gifts of real estate program.

Ken began his career in advancement at Drew University, first as sports information director and later as the university editor, Director of Advancement Communications, and finally as Director of Planned Giving. In that last position he managed a five-year legal case that ended in a negotiated settlement that brought $14 million to the university for an arts center.

His writing has gained notice as well. Ken is the co-author of Images of America: Atlantic City (Arcadia Publishing, 2000), a photographic history of the resort town, and his essay “How I Lost My Memory” appeared in the online journal The Rumpus. Ken has also written television commercials and industrial videos, produced an award-winning sports special on the NJ Cable Television Network, drafted scripts for campaign videos, and earned seven national awards for his publications. During Ken’s tenure as an editor, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education named DREW one of the nation’s 16 best university magazines.

Ken earned his bachelor’s degree from Manchester University in Indiana and a Master of Philosophy in English literature from Drew. He and his wife live in northeast Pennsylvania.

The Advancement Investment Metrics Study (AIMS) stives to analyze and report “advancement investments” to help schools, colleges and universities benchmark their own levels of Cost Per Dollar Raised (CPDR) and compare their results with other institutions. This handout outlines approaches to help make judgments about what expenditures to include and exclude when obtaining and reporting data.


The Angeletti Group, LLC (TAG) issues this whitepaper for consideration by nonprofit leaders as they seek to plan their organizations’ short and longer term futures. Specifically, TAG encourages nonprofits to focus on three external and six internal factors that will inevitably affect their goals, objectives, and outcomes. While your organization cannot control external factors (e.g., post-pandemic shifts, the economic climate, and global unrest), it can – and should – identify potential internal challenges on the horizon, make appropriate adjustments that will minimize their negative impact, and ensure that the necessary resources and efforts are deployed to support your organization’s upward trajectory.

That's where Cost Per Dollar Raised (CPDR) comes in. Both a mathematical formula and a strategic performance gauge, CPDR is used to determine how the costs of fundraising compare to an organization’s bottom line.

The time is now to invest in planned giving to make donors in your circle aware of the opportunities and benefits—both for the nonprofit they care about and themselves.
 
In many cases, planned gifts cost the donor nothing now, but can reap many benefits for them taxwise, while providing support to nonprofits they care about. 

In this article, TAG's planned giving expert, Kenneth D. Cole, discusses four main reasons why planned giving is so important -- and why your development office needs to invest in a planned giving program now.

As a senior executive, the Director of Development will report to the Chairman, President, and Development Committee. In this role, the Director will be responsible for strategizing, leading, and implementing bergenPAC’s development, fundraising, and community outreach initiatives.
