Winter 2021
A Message from Our President
It's the dawn of a new year, and with that comes new goals and new plans. As development professionals, we should look to 2020 as a year of learning--learning how to be nimble and adapt, how to communicate with donors and constituents in different ways, and how to plan for a faster- and ever-changing landscape. The start of a new year, and perhaps the start of a new approach to delivering your mission, is an excellent time to re-focus on strategic planning and goal-setting. It's also a time to "remember our roots" and brush up on everyday skills, including stewardship and cultivation.

The resources in this issue of TAGlines include ways to adapt to our new normal as well as tried-and-true development education. We've created a dedicated COVID-19 resources page on our website for all of our recent content; view it here. And we continue to share resources designed to help you in your everyday development role. What's on your mind in the coming year? Whether COVID-19-related or not, drop us a line. We're offering complimentary 30-minute consultations to nonprofits to help respond to today's challenges and cut the path toward future success.

We continue to work alongside our client partners as they navigate change and new demands to deliver their mission. Despite challenges, we are pleased for our clients who have cultivated remarkable support from their loyal donors, working together to address the effects of the pandemic. We're excited to share news from the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund, which recently secured a $20 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott for COVID-19 relief. Read more impact news from our client partners below, and please share yours with us!

As always, TAG is here for you as your nonprofit resource. Whether it's asking for gifts, re-directing campaigns, communicating with existing donors, organizing relief efforts, engaging new donors, and more, we are here to help with informal consultation and services.

New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund Receives Transformational $20M Gift

Congratulations to our client partner, NJPRF, on receiving a $20M gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Ms. Scott's generosity will have an incredible impact on the Fund's ability to help NJ residents most affected by the pandemic.
The grant is the largest donation to date to NJPRF and brings the total amount raised to more than $64 million. Since March, the fund has distributed $39.5 million to over 460 nonprofit organizations throughout the state.

NJPRF has collaborated with nonprofit organizations in all 21 counties to address the multifaceted challenges created by the pandemic, including providing assistance to food pantries, bridging the digital divide in low-income school districts, jump-starting an art and culture fund, reimagining childcare, aiding minority-owned and women-owned small businesses, and supporting free legal and counseling services to tenants facing eviction. With these additional funds in hand, the NJPRF board, which consists of corporate and philanthropic leaders from around the state, can now expand its assistance to vulnerable populations in the state. Read more about the gift here.

TAG has been working with NJPRF since its first weeks of inception to advance fundraising strategy and support the overall effort of the Board and volunteer-driven team.
Foote School Celebrates Historic Centennial Campaign

TAG extends our congratulations to The Foote School in New Haven, CT, on the successful completion of The Centennial Campaign, which doubled the school's endowment and made investments in teachers, students, and families.

In tandem with Foote's Centennial anniversary in 2016, the School launched The Centennial Campaign: Secure Foote's Future, to ensure The Foote School would not only survive but prosper for its second hundred years. The campaign focused on four pillars: 1) Attract and retain the best teachers by paying competitive salaries. 2) Sustain socioeconomic diversity by maintaining a robust financial aid policy and by minimizing tuition increases, which benefits all of our families 3) Increase faculty of color by further stepping up recruitment efforts to identify candidates of color and to commit immediate resources to this critical goal. 4) Ensure robust enrollment by investing in people, programs and facilities.

Plans for the Campaign were to actively fundraise for five years, ending in 2021, and the School declared early success in June 2020. TAG commends the leadership of campaign co-chairs Cindy Leffell and Rich Bershtein, the endorsement and tireless work of former Head of School, Carol Maoz, and the dedication and commitment of the Steering Committees and Foote School staff.

Decoding Donor Nasty-Grams...And How to Handle Without Losing Your Cool

It can feel downright discouraging—even personal—when a donor expresses their frustration. If you’ve ever been in a similar situation, there is a way out; it just requires a little patience, humility, and problem-solving. TAG reviews a variety of donor relations situations and provides tips to ensure you come out of your next “mishap” stronger than ever, with all relationships intact.
Help! My Donors Are Moving to Florida!

Twenty years ago, for most nonprofits, it might have been the case that 90% of your donor base lived down the street—or at least in your service area. Today, factoring in taxes, indefinite remote work assignments, and more ways to stay connected than ever before that trend is quickly turning. Your donors are not necessarily “right here at home.” So how do you hold on to faithful donors while they jet off to their new digs and set down roots in a new community?
COVID-19's Unexpected Update: Lots of New Donors. Now What?

Many nonprofits have seen a surge in new donors in the wake of the pandemic. Does your organization have a first-time donor stewardship plan in place? Haven’t refreshed it in a while? Now is the perfect time to assess this critical building block for sustained fundraising success. Not only will these strategies help you thank and retain this year’s new “COVID donors,” this approach offers a longer-term solution for effectively welcoming donors to your family.

Going The Distance: Hosting Fundraising Events with Social Distancing In Mind

As states determine new measures for safely opening recreational activities, fundraisers across the country are asking themselves the same question: what does this mean for my fundraising event? TAG talked with Tara Knapp, Vice President of Development, Public Relations and Marketing at Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, whose office organized a socially distanced golf outing fundraiser in June.
