This month, Tai Tokerau Trades Training celebrates the upwards movement of two of our original kaimahi, Roimata Haika and Regina Rapata.
Our two original teammates have both proven their performance and capability and have moved upwards as our bubble expanded. We are so blessed to have amazing mana wāhine working with us.

Roimata Haika has started managing our key projects across Education to Employment Brokerage Service and Whakaahu Whakamua as Projects and Strategy Manager.
Roimata is doing a fantastic job after helping build growth and developing our programmes.

Regina Rapata
Senior Vocational Coordinator/ System Support
|
Regina Rapata is moving into a Senior Vocational Coordinator position in our Education to Employment Brokerage team and supporting the review and development of our EEB systems.
Regina is helping to ensure the continued high performance of our EEB team after doing a fabulous job working around the schools supporting the effective transition of students.

Tai Tokerau Trades Training are expanding our team. We have two great positions available, working alongside amazing and talented staff.
We have a Kaiako (Tutor) role, based in the Mid - Far North, as well as a Vocational Coordinator/ Recruitment Support role, based in Whangarei at our Hannah Street office.

Book a presentation with the Northland based ETCO tutor. Students will learn about the electrical trades, which covers the services they can provide and how to transition from education to employment.
The presentation would be suited for students, whānau and teachers interested learning about a trade career.

Whangarei Boys High School Engineering Academy
Our Vocational Coordinators recently interacted with the wonderful students and tutor of the Whangarei Boys High School Engineering Academy. These young apprenticeship-ready students have developed excellent skills in panelling, automotive, welding and fabrication to help their transition into the industry.
The Engineering Academy tutor, Iain Haynes, exuded passion for his role, and his students have responded though becoming exemplary learners in their chosen field.
The EEB team are thrilled to share a video that highlights outstanding potential apprentices; we hope you enjoy meeting them as much as we did!

Pompallier Catholic College
Apprentice Panel Presentation 2020

Last Thursday, Tai Tokerau Trades Training proudly supported Pompallier Catholic College with the Apprentice Panel event. Students were able to engage kanohi ki te kanohi (face-to-face) with industry representatives about what to expect in specific industries as an apprentice.
This event aims to increase industry awareness to provide students with first-hand industry knowledge to develop clear career pathways.

One of the many successful outcomes of this event was seeing students enquiring about career opportunities across different industries. Many students had not previously considered some of these careers before this event. That was very fulfilling.
A special thanks to our industry panellists Damion Murray from North Drill, Annemieke Liuten from Plant Pro and Scott Higgens from Smart Trades Solutions for your support and valuable time. Ngā mihi nui kia tātou katoa.

Join us and explore careers in health and wellbeing!
With support from the Ministry of Education, Careerforce the Industry Training Organisation for the health and wellbeing sectors are running career exploration events for high school students.
The health and wellbeing sector needs more young people in the workforce to combat the existing workforce shortages.
The health and wellbeing sectors offer many exciting and rewarding career opportunities for young people, who want to make both a career, and a difference.
These sectors cover the likes of healthcare, social and community services, mental health, disability support, aged care, and youth work. Common across all the sectors is the increasingly challenging workforce shortages, and the need to attract younger people into their workforces.
We welcome high school students interested in:
- Pursuing a career within health and wellbeing, and earning as they’re learning.
- Helping people recover from illness or injury to live independent lives.
- Caring for the aged and vulnerable in the community.
- Providing quality service and patient care.
- Working with other young people to reach their full potential.
We have planned interactive workshops, activities and allowed time for employers and students to interact.

By meeting local producers, organisations and young professionals who have taken different education and training pathways, and hold a diverse range of roles in our food & fibre sectors, you’ll hear different perspectives first-hand that you can share with your students back in your classroom.

These roles will be based at our manufacturing sites right across Aotearoa; from Kauri in Northland right down to Edendale in Southland.
Over the next few weeks we’ll be chatting to some of our current apprentices to hear about the cool stuff they get up to and find out a bit more about each type of apprenticeship.

BDX is Northalnd's largest Engineering firm, providing a wide range of services. A mixture of trade qualified staff and apprentices who undertake plant maintenance, shut-down servicing, steel fabrication and welding, safety improvement projects, mechanical engineering, truck and machinery servicing and civil construction work. There is on and off-site work so this makes the job interesting.
Our project work is diverse and has included the Golden Bay tyre-burning environmental project, the Corrections security facilities upgrade, viaduct bridge for Kiwi rail, light towers at Northport, Golden Bay pipework and Port Nikau marina repairs and maintenance.
BDX has worked closely with Whangarei Boys High to offer work experience through Gateway. This is seen as a great chance for Engineering Students to gain practical experience and encourage young people to explore Engineering as a career option.

BDX has a great mix of apprentices including school leavers and adult apprentices. Engineering is not limited to males – some of our most successful apprentices have been female.
When recruiting apprentices, those who have had work experience have the upper hand. We look for those with practical skills, the right attitude (a willingness to get stuck in and learn) and someone who will listen well and fit in with the team. We work 45 hours a week, so punctuality is a must, as is keeping fit and healthy. We do random drug testing to make sure everyone at work is safe and maintain very high safety standards.
In return, the apprentice gets on-job training, external training, the opportunity to work with qualified trades staff and a rewarding and interesting career. BDX will continue to support young people through work experience opportunities as they are our future workforce.
