Tai Tokerau Trades Training extends a belated happy new year to you all and a warm welcome to 2022!

Thank you all for the generous support, endless effort, and mahi done in 2021.

It is great to be back, though, it must be said, this is not the start to the year that we had hoped for.

Although 2022 is so far looking as chaotic as 2021, I think it is fair to say that at least we are all aware of what this looks like now and are very adaptable at making do with challenging circumstances. After all, we are well practised!

Thus we are looking forward to another year working with you all, and playing our part to uphold and lift the development of our young people into fulfilling career journeys.

Bring it on 2022, we got this!

We have some news regarding our whanau mahi here at Tai Tokerau Trades Training, again!
This time we are hugely excited to welcome a new Vocational Coordinator to our EEB team, Regan Haika.
Regan is very keen to take on his new role. He can not wait to meet and interact with you all, and we hope you welcome him too.
"Kia Ora, my name is Regan.
I was born and raised in Whangarei, but I am from Mokau, Whangaruru on my father’s side and Tokatoka, Ruawai on my mother’s. I have a strong love for the three places I call home. I have a passion for helping my community and the young people in my community. Since discovering this passion I have searched for (and obviously found) employment that would allow me to feed this passion!!!
I am so excited to be a part of this extraordinary team and can’t wait to see where this opportunity takes me on this adventure called life!"

Tai Tokerau Trades Training Event updates 2022:
As we know, 2022 has not been the smooth start we all wanted. With the requirements regarding events and education at Red and Orange light as they are, and Omicron rearing its ugly head, we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel our upcoming inter-school events for the foreseeable future.

We are extremely saddened by this, as we are passionate about delivering these events and the exposure and knowledge building they offer our students. However, the safety of our communities, students, industry friends and whanau must always come first.

Although this brings us sadness, we have developed our skillset at pivoting!

Our EEB team has spent many weeks preparing a variety of outstanding options, offering in-school delivery in a much more low-risk way without compromising critical information and engagement practices.

Keep reading for more information on these options for your school or Kura!

Below are the details of the affected events.

Tai Tokerau Trades Training - School Visits
Our EEB team is prioritising touching base with our schools in Term One 2022 to learn your needs and how we can service your school and students best.

Our EEB team had the pleasure of travelling north and visiting Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Hokianga last week. They were able to sit down and have an in-depth korero about how we can help and support their akonga.

Together with the Kura, our team scheduled dates to run the Pathways Presentation to their juniors and seniors, ensuring they have the critical knowledge they need for both senior school and transitions. We also discussed our Employability Programme Workshops, which we will be delivering to their akonga over the coming Terms. We are beyond excited to share this knowledge with the Kura and their akonga!

It was a pleasure to connect and korero with people who share our passion for their student journeys beyond Kura.

This Presentation has been built to deliver the basics and is generally targeted at Years 9 and 10 students. We aim to encourage exploration and self-awareness, which, as we know, are crucial steps in career education for this age group.

This Presentation covers

  • Real-life scenarios, through experiences of the facilitators
  • Successes and learnings of the presenters themselves,
  • The basics of the education system - difference between University , Polytech and Apprenticeship
  • How to navigate the pressures of being asked, "what are you going to do when you leave school."
  • Key questions to ask one's self when thinking about pathway options
  • What subject selection is for
  • Tools such as the Vocational Pathways to support exploration
  • Who their Careers staff are, and/or what Trade Academy is available to them
Tai Tokerau Trades Training - Employability Workshops
  • Soft skill development for work-readiness
Our employability programme is a business-led programme across all industry sectors, designed to respond to business and industry concerns that young people may not be developing the soft skills required to succeed in the workplace.

We provide a sequence of learning activities and workshops to build work readiness skills that business leaders have identified they want to see in young people.

Our Employability Programme offers a set series of interactive workshops focusing on core employability skills. We have developed eight x 1-hour workshops from which you can choose. Your school/kura can select 5 of the eight workshops, selecting the workshops which best align with your ākonga needs and stages of their transition journey. Each workshop is 1 hour or one class period in length.

The workshops are:

  • Ko wai ahau? – Akonga will identify their values, interests, and skills.
  • Goalsetting - Akonga will identify goals and potential challenges they may face and learn about ways to overcome them
  • Communication – Akonga will learn about the importance of communicating at work and how to do it professionally
  • Positive attitude – Akonga will understand what it means to have a positive attitude at work and learn about the STAR formula to overcome and resolve issues.
  • Willingness to learn – Akonga will learn how having a Willingness to Learn improves their standing in the workplace and how to cultivate this skill.
  • Teamwork – Akonga will learn the importance of being a team player and building trust with co-workers to succeed in the workplace.
  • CV and Cover letter skills – Akonga will learn about CV and Cover letter writing
  • Interview skills – Akonga will learn and practice interview skills to aid them in their transition to employment.
NorthCATE - CATE NZ
For the new Careers and Transitions staff in our rohe, it is so essential for you to have the support and information you need, and it is often hard to come by!
These roles can feel isolating, particularly when so many schools have small staffing numbers devoted to Career education.

Our team would like to tautoko the message from NorthCATE - our regional CATE group, who would love to connect with any Careers and Transitions based staff who see the benefit of collaborative knowledge sharing.

NorthCATE consists of many of the careers and transitions staff from all over the region, who meet and share their knowledge via regular catchups, groups on Facebook, conferences and organised professional development opportunities.

The links below will take you to the Facebook groups. Thanks to Eileen Crawford, chair of NorthCATE, we have included links to necessary documentation that may be of value for any school engaging in Gateway. We have shared these links previously. As we feel these links are valuable, particularly at this time of the year, we would like to share them again.

CATE NZ - New Career Advisor Induction Programme
This workshop has been designed to upskill Career Advisors that are newly appointed to the role. These will run over two days in Auckland from 9am – 3pm.

Content will include an overview of Career Education in New Zealand, developing a career education plan looking at available resources, ideas for initiating career conversations, supporting senior students in application processes and systems to manage information.
If your school or Kura would like to discuss becoming a member of NorthCATE and take advantage of these professional development opportunities, please connect with NorthCATE's secretary at:

"My Favorite part about my new job is the people here, they are encouraging, really nice, funny and helpful” - Ava Collins
Young Wahine to begin her Trade Apprenticeship
Thanks to effective teamwork via our EEB team and a motivated, passionate employer, Ava Collins, an ex-student of Kamo High School, made her leap from secondary education to vocational training and employment in January 2022.

Building and Fire Safety LTD connected with our EEB team as they sought to add an Apprentice to their team.

We have some words from Mike about his experience connecting with our team to 'pathway' young talent in the direction of his business.

“We connected with the team at Tai Tokerau Trades Training and EEB because we knew they had great connections in the community and trusted their process of recommending us school leavers. We found the process of working with TTTT and EEB in selecting an apprentice very easy and effective. We chose Ava to fill our apprentice vacancy after a detailed selection and interview process of a group of school leavers that were recommended to us from the team at TTTT and EEB. They were all really great, however we found Ava stood out the most and would be a perfect addition to our workplace. We will definitely use TTTT and EEB again for any future apprenticeships and recommend them to any other trades businesses seeking apprentices.”
- Mike Lindsay - Building and Fire Safety owner

Congratulations to both Ava and Mike. We are proud to have played a part in your stories.
Service IQ - 2022 Gateway resources for schools and kura
Service IQ have provide the following information regarding their offerings for Secondary students over 2022.
Competenz - 2022 for schools and kura
Although Competenz does not currently offer Gateway programmes, they are passionate about supporting youth into their various pathways (e.g. Fabrication, Forestry, Bakery).

We want to tautoko this, as Competenz (previously an ITO) has been proactive in engaging with our school-based events and has never shied away from a chance to connect and support youth.

We want to introduce Bree Evans to those who do not know her.
She is the Careers Advisor for Competenz and is passionate about supporting young people into work experiences.

If this is something that may suit your students, do not hesitate to connect with the lovely Bree, and she will no doubt set you on the right path.
