Kā tangi te tītī,
Kā tangi te kākā,
Kā tangi hoki ahau,
Tihei Mauri Ora!
Tēnā koutou katoa i tēnei rangi,
He taonga te reo Māori. He mea tuku mai e ō tātou mātua tupuna hei tukutanga mā tātou ngā uri o rātou mā, ki ngā uri whakaheke. Ki te ngoikore tātou, ka ngoikore anō ko tō tātou reo. Kaua e tukuna te reo Māori kia memeha noa!

|
Greetings to you all on this day,
Tai Tokerau Trades Training acknowledges the efforts of the Māori Language Commission in undertaking and promoting this initiative each year, so that the Māori language remains high in the conscience of people, no matter who they are and where they are from.
So, colleagues be staunch, steadfast and stout-hearted towards the indigenous language of this country. Speak it, write it, and read it so that it does not become extinct, just the like moa became extinct. The Māori language is a treasure. It was passed down from our forebears to us, their descendants, to pass on down to our descendants. If we are apathetic about the Māori language, it will lose impetus. So let us not let the Māori language simply fade away!

Secondary School Highlights
|
|
Our Vocational Coordinators recently spent time meeting with the wonderful students and tutor of the Darvaille High School Building Academy. It was a privillage to talk to such passionate and capable young people, and see such leadership and drive from Tim Pratt, the building academy tutor.
Check out the amazing work from these future apprentices!
|
|
Looking for a future apprentice or providing work experience, look no further!
These students are outstanding and have a real insight for their future industry. Tim Pratt has mentored these prospective tradesmen to become work-ready, with a large focus on teamwork and employability skills.
The students have had experience through all aspects of timber frame construction due to their time in the Trades Academy, and are proud of the skills they have developed.
The academy established over ten years ago recently gained a contract with Kainga Ora (formerly known as Housing New Zealand) to put their skills to use in building prefabricated, transportable homes to help address the national housing shortage. Tim admits that securing this contract was no mean feat, but the support from a sponsor helped establish the build of the first home, which was an advantage to securing the deal.
The academy has had great success and has sold two houses this year with intentions to build six more in 2021. Tim and the school would love to expand the Trades Academy by developing other trade workshops. The funds from the builds will support the development of an automotive academy in the school.
Tim has some excellent insights into the contractural processes for contract tenders. He has a wealth of knowledge in this area and is eager to share his learnings with other schools to encourage the development of Trades Academy throughout Te Tai Tokerau.
If you would like to highlight your students or your school to discuss opportunities, please feel free to contact your dedicated Tai Tokerau Trades Training Vocational Coordinator.

Year 10 Pathway To Employment Event
Friday 11 September 2020
|
|
Tai Tokerau Trades Training was privileged to support Whangārei Boys' High School (WBHS) in the development and operations of their fantastic 'Pathways To Employment Day', this year.
This year was the first year the school organised a significant event, and they did exceptionally well undertaking much mahi throughout the process. We are proud to work alongside our secondary schools who work proactively in supporting the development of vocational pathway awareness events and activities for their students.
This aim of this particular event was to increase industry awareness and exploration to all Year 10 students. Approximately 200+ students attended and discovered a variety of pathway options to inspire them to start thinking about potential career pathways before entering their senior years. It was delightful to see many students interacting in workshop activities, enquiring about career-specific information and listening with great interest in different industries they never considered, which is one of many successful outcomes of this event.
It was a fantastic day to be a part of, and we would like to express our thanks to WBHS for inviting us to collaborate.
We would also like to give a special thanks to our industries who supported on the day. It could not have happened without your support. We recognise how valuable your time is and are incredibly grateful and proud to see so many industries who are active in supporting the youth throughout Te Tai Tokerau.
The supporting industries have recognised the value in vocational education activities and have identified the potential to increase interest and boost industries recruitment through engaging in secondary school events. Tai Tokerau Trades Training will continue to develop strong industry connections on behalf of the Education to Employment Brokerage Service.

People Potential Youth Service
|
|
People Potential Youth Service is able to help a range of taitamariki aged between 16 to 19 years old.
We operate three services which differ slightly from each other. All of these are free services, funded by the Ministry of Social Development.
-
Youth Payment; ensuring that young people who are not living at home are able to be financially and mentally supported on their journey to independence
-
Young Parent Payment; where we are able to assist young mothers and fathers by providing financial assistance, parenting education and much more
-
Our NEET service; this is for young people who are Not in Employment, Education or Training. It is for those who have left school early or are at risk of leaving school due to various reasons. We aim to help them into education, training or work-based learning, so they gain the skills to find a job and have an independent future
Our Youth Coaches help their clients set goals and develop an action plan. Their plan includes driver licences, CVs, qualifications, employment, budgeting skills and anything else they might need to help them overcome barriers. For our young mums and dads, our Youth Coaches can also support them while they care for their little one, and help them get back into education or training when the time is right.
When a young person registers with us they are allocated a coach, who is their on-going contact so that they are able to build up trust and rapport with the one consistent person. We find that this is something the young people really like. We have a team of awesome coaches who are passionate about what they do and willing to go the extra mile to help their clients succeed. We believe that education isn’t just about passing exams and gaining credits - it’s about discovering what you can do and figuring out the right path that will help you to think bigger, feel stronger, and build a brighter future.
If you know of a young person who may be interested in our service or who you think would benefit from having some extra support around them, please give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you and being able to help you or your young person succeed.
Please free phone us on 0800 21 YOUTH (0800 21 96884), or email hannahr@peoplepotential.co.nz, alternatively you can find us on Facebook (Youth Service Whangarei) for more information.
