Hero's in the Faith
We all need people we can look up to—examples who challenge us to be our best by striving each day to do what is right, doing it well, and encouraging others to do the same. Those people are all around us if we take the time to notice, and to me and many others, Jeff Cardwell is one of the finest examples I have been blessed to know.
| |
Jeff was born in Morgantown, Kentucky, and was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. Paying his way through college, Jeff earned his college degree at Indiana Wesleyan University. Continuing his education, Jeff received his real estate sales license in 1984 and his brokerage license in 1986. In 1996, he was accredited by the Residential Sales Council as a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), a distinction awarded to only 4 percent of Realtors nationwide.
In 1976, Jeff began his professional career in the lumber and building material industry and today, he serves as president and CEO of Cardwell Do-it Best Home Center. In addition, he also serves as the Chairman of Madison Capital, LLC, President of Huddleston Professional Centre, CEO of Henry Lynn, LLC, and Senior Vice President of Sextons Creek Government Affairs.
In 1980, Jeff launched his construction and land development career. In 1994, Builder/Architect Magazine named him “Builder of the Month.” Later that year, he was named “Builder of the Year” by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis. In March of 1994, Jeff launched his radio career with the People Helping People Network which was syndicated for more than 20 years throughout Central Indiana.
In 1998, Jeff built the first prototype of the Do-it Best hardware store. Located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Do-It Best Corp’s world headquarters serves more than 4,000 independent members in more than 55 nations, with $3+ billion in annual sales. This new concept propelled Do-it Best Corp to dominance in the hardware, lumber and building material industry among independent store owners.
In June 2000, Jeff went on his first mission trip, traveling to El Salvador. On January 13, 2001, a devastating earthquake hit El Salvador, killing more than a thousand people, and leaving more than 1 million people homeless. In less than 90 days, Jeff organized a group of volunteers who provided more than $2 million dollars of in-kind emergency relief supplies to the earthquake victims.
Jeff Cardwell is an American businessman, philanthropist, and political figure who founded The People Helping People Network (PHP), a global faith-based non-profit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty. He launched the network in 2001 after a life-changing church mission trip to El Salvador with his young daughter. Today, the organization operates heavily in Latin America and community development sectors, combining housing infrastructure with humanitarian relief.
Outside of his non-profit work, Jeff is a prominent figure in Indiana business and politics. He serves as the President and CEO of Cardwell Do-it Best Home Center in Indianapolis. He previously served as the Chairman of the Indiana Republican Party, as well as a senior adviser to former Governor Mike Pence and Senator Jim Banks.
Jeff is a prominent political and community figure from Indiana, best known for his role as the former chair of the Republican Party of Indiana.
Career Highlights
- Indiana GOP Chairman: Headed the state's Republican party organization.
-
Founder: Established The People Helping People Network, a non-profit humanitarian organization.
- Lobbyist & Advisor: Joined a prominent lobbying firm following his political leadership career.
- Education: Attended college at Indiana Wesleyan University.
The HOPE Equation
The mission of The People Helping People Network revolves around what Cardwell calls the "HOPE Equation":
The Organization uses this holistic framework to turn short-term crisis relief into long-term community growth: Housing: Partnering directly with The Fuller Center for Housing to build safe, affordable homes.
- Hunger Relief: Supplying food staples and establishing feeding initiatives to combat nutritional instability.
- Healthcare: Providing access to fundamental medical attention, clinic facilities, and vital treatments.
- Education: Offering vocational training, tutoring, and funding schools to expand future economic pathways Major Impact Areas & Initiatives
- Focus on El Salvador: Cardwell has spent decades implementing community projects in El Salvador. His extensive work building homes, supporting clinics, and training locals earned him the official title of "Noble Friend of El Salvador" from the Salvadoran Congress in 2019.
- Strategic Alliances: Rather than working alone, PHP scales its impact by joining forces with international groups like Convoy of Hope, Timmy Global Health, and the Fuller Center.
Media & Books: The movement originally grew out of a syndicated radio broadcast that Cardwell hosted for over 20 years. He has authored books mapping out this mission, including The HOPE Equation and You Are Uniquely Created, Gifted & Called.
Q&A with Jeff Cardwell, Board Chairman, about thriving operations in El Salvador

Photo: Jeff Cardwell (left) with David Snell at a Fuller Center Community under Construction in El Salvador
Jeff Cardwell, chairman of The Fuller Center for Housing’s board of directors, is also the founder of The People Helping People Network — our partners in El Salvador.
Housing is one of several areas of focus for The People Helping People Network in the country. They also work in the areas of hunger relief, healthcare and education.
Cardwell visited operations in El Salvador last week along with Fuller Center President David Snell and sat down Thursday to chat via Zoom with our Vice President of Communications, Chris Johnson.
Here is an excerpt from that conversation:
CHRIS: We talk at The Fuller Center about “Building a better world, one house at a time.” But it’s hard to see one house at a time in El Salvador the way they’re building left and right. This program is designed where the more you build, the more you can build as the repayments are recycled and build over and over again. But could you ever have imagined the scale and the way it’s taking off right now?
JEFF: You know, really, I could not. It’s just so many good people coming together. I think what we’ve seen here is exponential growth by the partnership between The Fuller Center for Housing and The People Helping People Network. With Fuller Center for Housing being 100 percent focused on providing housing — the foundation for a family; you cannot have the growth within the family if you don’t have that firm foundation of a home — it all begins there with The Fuller Center for Housing. Then you bring in the energy and the opportunities with the wrap-around services of The People Helping People Network. I think we’re now seeing exponential growth of community and neighborhoods within The Fuller Center as we bring in the hunger relief, the healthcare and the education programs.
(The People Helping People Network operates on the HOPE Equation — Housing + Hunger Relief + Healthcare + Education x Faith = HOPE.)
We find that when we are able to help people in crisis of food insecurity or healthcare needs or training programs, they really become better homeowners and are more reliable on their payments back to The Fuller Center so that we can recycle those funds within the community to build more homes. You’re taking the people living there now, and you’re making those people very connected within their community as donors to really pay it forward to help the next family of need. We’re really being blessed to see exponential growth by having that special partnership.

Cardwell wrote this book as a reminder that your life, story, and experiences matter. Finding Your Purpose on the Journey
Where are you headed in life’s journey?
Do you know?
What is your definite purpose?
Without a clear purpose, it is hard to know where we are going. Purpose gives direction, and if you do not know where you're headed or why, any road will seem to take you there.
Many of us are not sure.
I understand that uncertainty because I lived with it before at times.
Many of us assume our purpose is to grow up, get a good education, build a career, make money, find someone to love, raise a family, and enjoy simple pleasures on the weekends.
There is nothing wrong with those things, but they are temporary and never meant to define our entire purpose.
At this stage of life, we have experienced many of the things we once hoped for, but they are still only things, not purpose. Things have value, and we need them as physical beings, but I have come to believe it is good to have things as long as they do not control us.
If life is only the result of chance, then none of this may seem to matter, but if God is real and created everything, including you and me, then everything changes. That possibility invites us to see that we are not accidents and that there is something greater ahead—something eternal. That is true long-term vision.
Years ago, I heard a thought that has helped Andre’a and me through many struggles: long-term dreams and goals overcome short-term frustrations. The Hope of Heaven is the longest view of all because it is eternal.
We may not all begin life from the same place, but we can all finish at the same destination when the race is run well.
On the journey, success is often built on what others call failure. But if we are learning, we are not truly failing. Pay attention, keep learning, and stay on the road. If you do not give up, you can still reach the right destination.
Doing your best is always a choice. Keep believing and put your faith in Jesus. If you belong to Him and He is calling you, He will carry you through, no matter how difficult things may appear.
We often learn more from our setbacks than from our successes. Progress on the journey usually means trying, adjusting, and trying again.
Winners are not the ones who never struggle; they are the ones who refuse to quit, adapt, and keep moving forward until they find a way.
So, if you do not succeed at first, let that outcome motivate you to learn, improve, and keep going. Here are some of the qualities that help people win on the journey—and that can help us too:
They Are Other Centered rather than Self-Centered
They think long-term. (Like as Far as Heaven Long-Term)
They are inspired and grounded in a Strong Reasons
The Begin with the End in Mind and Develop a Strong Cause and a Purpose
They Associate and Surround Themselves with People who Encourage and Uplift Them.
They are Always Willing to Change Willing When Convicted They Need To
They take responsibility for themselves and for where they are in life.
They seek guidance and wise counsel.
They are joyful because they are grateful.
They forgive themselves and others.
They take consistent action.
They choose to stay organized.
They Develop Discipline and Choose to Stay organized
They Eliminate Distractions.
They Never Give Up
