Warhawk Family Newsletter
June 2020 issue 1
Welcome to the Warhawk family!
Welcome to the Warhawk family!

As Chancellor of this great legacy university, I wanted to be the first to welcome you not only to UW-Whitewater but to this newsletter. We know that families play a critical role in the success of our students, and I see this newsletter as a partnership between you as family members and those of us who work to provide the best possible learning environment for our students.

If your student is new to campus, you’ll find we talk about the Warhawk family a great deal. The Warhawk family is not just us — the faculty and staff who are dedicated to providing a caring and supportive environment for students to learn and thrive. It’s also family members like you.

As your student prepares to join us in the fall, whether as a new or returning student, know that all across both of our campuses faculty and staff are working hard to provide a safe environment for all Warhawks. We know that in bringing thousands of students together there is inherent risk, but we are doing everything possible to mitigate that risk and to ensure the best learning environment possible.

We intend to have students, faculty and staff back in some form on both campuses this fall and will be updating you throughout the summer as the plans evolve. We’ll be holding a Virtual Town Hall for family members in the coming weeks and will be sure to get the information out to you so you can send us your questions and participate in the event.

I look forward to meeting you and your student on campus one time soon. In the meantime, I encourage you to reach out to our colleagues at Admissions , First Year Experience , Housing , and other departments to share your questions and concerns. You and your student are not alone in this journey — we are in it together. As we like to say at UW-Whitewater, we are even better together.

Again, welcome!

Dr. Dwight C. Watson,
Chancellor
FAQs for incoming students and their families
Congratulations to your #FutureWarhawk! Here are some answers to the frequently asked questions we are seeing from incoming students and their families.

How do we commit to UW-Whitewater?
To reserve a spot and set yourself up for a successful year, please help your student follow the steps below:

Find more information at Next Steps .

How will my student enroll in classes?
Students will work with an academic advisor during the Warhawks SOAR program to select courses. You'll find more on SOAR below.

How can family members get more information or get their questions answered?
Great question! We offer many ways for you to stay informed, whether on your own or in conjunction with your student:
  • This year’s SOAR will include an online orientation program you can complete with your student and a live virtual session where you can learn more about their academic college. Ask your student to forward their SOAR information email to you for the complete details.
  • First Year Experience (FYE) is hosting live webinar sessions over the summer on topics we know you are thinking about, including these two upcoming sessions about paying for college:
  • 3 p.m. Monday, June 22: Join session
  • 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 1: Join session
  • Chancellor Watson and other members of the leadership team will be holding a Virtual Town Hall for family members of current and incoming students later this summer. Look for details in an upcoming newsletter.
  • As a family member, you are encouraged to join the Warhawk Family Connections group on Facebook. It’s a wealth of information for incoming families, with current family members and staff members weighing in frequently to answer questions.
  • All university announcements can be viewed online.
Warhawks SOAR

During Warhawks SOAR , which is taking place virtually, students will:
  • Learn important information about campus to help them prepare
  • Connect with an academic advisor to discuss their academic options
  • Register for classes
  • Meet other new Warhawks

We welcome family members to participate in the program as well. Your student can register for SOAR through their WINS account now, and will receive more details about the event via email 10 days before the program date.

Please contact the  First Year Experience  at  fye@uww.edu  or 262-472-3205 with any questions about SOAR.
Residence hall assignments

Residence hall assignments are generally shared by August 1. Many factors come into play in these decisions — including whether students have completed the next steps, above — so we appreciate your patience! Please visit University Housing or call 262-472-4255.
