Burlington City Council Inauguration
|
|
|
December 3 marked the official inauguration of Burlington City Council 2018-2022. This landmark event, held at a sold-out Burlington Performing Arts Centre, included song, dance and official swearing in of Mayor Marianne Meed Ward and fellow council members.
The new council features 5 new to council members - myself, Lisa Kearns, Rory Nisan, Shawna Stolte and Angelo Bentivegna. We also have 2 returning members - Marianne Meed Ward (former Ward 2 Councillor, incoming Mayor) and Paul Sharman (incumbent).
I look forward to working with and learning from all of my council colleagues. Contact information for all of Council is below:

Retail Cannabis in Burlington
|
|
|
Municipalities have been asked by the Provincial Government to make a one-time decision to opt in or out of retail cannabis stores by January 22, 2019. In preparation for this, the City of Burlington launched an online survey to gauge public opinion, as well as hosted a Mayor's Town Hall held December 12.
Thank you to the 1926 respondents who took time to provide their input on the survey, as well as the 106 residents who attended the town hall.
Online survey results (as at December 17):
- 65.4% support having cannabis retail stores in Burlington
- 40.9% would prefer to have the option to purchase cannabis both online and in retail stores
Town Hall survey results (as at December 12):
- 67% had not completed the online survey previously
- 82% support having cannabis retail stores in Burlington
- 39% would prefer to have the option to purchase cannabis both online and in retail stores
On December 17, Council considered input from delegations, survey respondents, resident emails, and staff report and voted to defer their decision until January to allow for more resident input.

The decision regarding allowing retail cannabis in our city is fast approaching and we are busy collecting public opinion to better understand our community on this issue. Like any major decision, there are pro’s and con’s to the both sides of the outcome.
Please reach out to my office with your feelings on the subject. Our council only has until January 22/2019 to opt out of the market so time is limited on this decision.

Halton Region Review of Burlington's Official Plan
|
|
|
Burlington’s Official Plan was sent back to us on December 4
th
due to non-conformity with the Region’s Official plan. It did not meet the Region’s plan in terms of the following policies:
- Proposed employment land conversions and permitted uses within the employment areas and lands.
- The identification of and permitted uses within agricultural lands
- The identification of and permitted uses within the Natural Heritage System: and
- Transportation matters, including road classifications
At this point staff and council are planning to take the opportunity to revisit some of the other areas of the Official plan that were tabled as concerns during the election period. We will keep you posted on any further developments.

Winter Control 2018-2019
|
|
Every year, the City of Burlington Roads, Parks and Forestry staff provide
snow removal services
throughout the city.
The fleet of snow clearing equipment and crews aim to clear your roads and sidewalks as quickly and efficiently as possible. The City of Burlington has approximately 1,900 km of roads and 850 km of sidewalks. We ask that you please give crews
24 hours after the storm has ended
to make any snow
clearing requests
. Please note that City staff concentrate on the primary and secondary routes first.
For information on which roads are designated as primary, secondary and residential, please refer to the following priority map:

Please be advised that on-street parking is suspended during snowstorms until the local roads are cleared. Visit our
street parking and snow clearing
page for more information.
