Dear Ward 1 residents, welcome to the second edition of Ward 1 News!
The first 60 days of office have now been completed and I am getting into a routine of working and travelling to downtown. This is all very different to me as for most of my working life, I have lived and worked in the Aldershot community.
At the moment, city staff and Council are busy working on the budget. Council is faced with a 3.99% increase and we are both trying to learn what all the numbers mean and then trying to find ways to trim this figure to something less. Not an easy task for some who have not had business finances experience. The city has been doing an excellent job with workshops to bring us all up to speed on the various department needs and budget requirements.
As a council that has been committed to better public engagement, please
let me know
your thoughts and provide input to our task at hand.
As always, you can contact my office with Ward 1 related issues. We'd be happy to help.

Mayor's State of the City Address - Red Tape Red Carpet Task Force
|
|
|
On January 30, 2019 at Mayor Meed Ward's State of the City Address, the launch of the
Red Tape, Red Carpet Task Force
was announced. Mayor Meed Ward has asked that I co-lead this important initiative, which aims to eliminate "red tape" barriers and bureaucratic delays to doing business in Burlington.
In the near future, the Task Force will have an initial kick off meeting open to the public, which will provide an opportunity for business owners to identify specific pain points. Once this has occurred, a smaller group of stakeholders will be identified who will devise an action plan which will be presented to Council, and then shared with the Province by summer of 2019.
This Task Force is a great step towards addressing the obstacles business owners see when they look to
expand
or start a new business here in Burlington. We have
the space
, infrastructure, and talented
work force
to support them, we just need to fast-track the approvals and processes that limit and frustrate them. I know from first-hand experience that we can identify the low-hanging fruit and come up with some actionable solutions that will make a real difference. We want to let business owners know that Burlington is open for business.
If you are interested in participating in this Task Force, please contact the Mayor's office at
mayor@burlington.ca

Retail Cannabis in Burlington
|
|
|
After much public consultation and engagement, Burlington City Council voted on January 14, 2019 at a Special Meeting of Council to allow the operation of retail cannabis stores in Burlington.
What this vote will mean for our city is that bricks and mortar stores with an approved license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (ACGO), will be permitted to sell recreational cannabis in Burlington as early as April 1, 2019.
While the ACGO has made 25 retail licenses for cannabis stores in Ontario available, 6 of which are in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) it is not yet known if there will be an application and license approval for a cannabis store in Burlington.
Council has also voted in favour of creating a citizen task force with terms of reference that include bylaw recommendations and the creation of guidelines for future retail cannabis stores.
This is an ongoing conversation, and I will keep residents updated through social media and my newsletter.

Aldershot BIA Holiday Lights
Many residents have contacted my office commenting on the holiday lights lining Plains Rd. I heard from many that they are very happy with the new snowflake cascade design.
Aldershot BIA Executive Director Judy Worsley shares:
"Beautification is part of the Aldershot Village BIA mandate. A longtime goal of the Aldershot BIA is to put up lights along Plains Road at Christmas, as well as having our Village Tree Lighting. This year we completed Phase One of our Holiday Light Program but not without challenges. We worked with the City to reconfigure the available metal poles to put up the lights as they needed hydro. Then we were not happy with our original choice and worked with the manufacturer to replace the lights with the snowflake design you now see.
We heard your concerns and responded. The money for this project comes from the levy that all businesses pay on Plains Road to the Aldershot Village BIA. For more information, please contact

Aldershot High School "Seat Yourself Campaign"
This initiative, aimed towards raising money to refurbish the seats in the auditorium, which were nearing 60 years old. The Seat Yourself Committee composed of parents, staff and community partners initially had a goal of raising $120,000.
After many years of fundraising events, hard work and perseverance, the goal has been met in full! Renovations have already begun, with the expected seat installations this spring.
A Grand Opening ceremony will be planned once the project has been completed.
For more information on this and other Aldershot High School Events, please contact
Maria McLellan, Principal of Aldershot School.
