Women, Money, & Politics Watch 2024
Last week, CAWP launched a brand-new project in our roster of Election Watch resources. Women, Money, & Politics Watch 2024 expands upon the CAWP Women, Money, and Politics Series by tracking gender and campaign finance throughout a live election for the first time. Part one of our phased rollout, which tracks congressional fundraising recipient data in 10 key states (AZ, CO, GA, FL, MA, MI, NM, OH, PA, WA), is live now; use this new data to track average fundraising totals, self-financing, and small dollar contributions in congressional races in our key states.
Future phases in Women, Money, & Politics Watch 2024 will explore donor data, state races in our key states, and congressional fundraising in all fifty states. This data, powered in part by OpenSecrets, is brought to life through interactive data visualizations by Graphicacy. Explore this new resource, which allows users to download data visualizations as image files and share with their networks, at the Women, Money, & Politics Watch 2024 site .

News from Election Watch 2024
Primary elections for congressional and state offices were held recently in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Texas, alongside additional contests in the presidential primaries, and CAWP has been tracking results for women candidates in these races.
-
On March 6th, Nikki Haley suspended her presidential campaign. In the course of this presidential primary, she became the first woman to win a Republican presidential nominating contest when she won the Washington, D.C. primary and the first woman to win a state Republican presidential primary when she won in Vermont. With 94 delegates earned thus far, Haley has earned the most delegates through nominating contests of any Republican woman in history, though final delegate votes will be determined at the Republican convention.
- For the first time in 32 years, California will not be represented by at least one woman in the U.S. Senate, as both candidates who advanced in California’s top-two primary for Senate are men. California is also the first state to have been represented by two women in the Senate.
-
Mississippi is one of two states that has never sent a woman to the U.S. House of Representatives. That is unlikely to change as a result of the 2024 election. One woman – Dianne Black (D) – advanced to the general election for the U.S. House in Mississippi, but she will run as a Democratic challenger for a seat strongly favoring the Republican incumbent.
-
Arkansas, which is currently represented by zero women in Congress, will likely see no change for women’s representation in its congressional delegation. Both women nominees in Arkansas congressional races are challengers to incumbents who are strongly favored to win re-election.
