Happy March, District 6!
February flew by, and as we step into a new month, I’m excited to share the many opportunities, events, and celebrations happening across our community.

This past Friday, we hosted the first Movin' with Mulcahy activity. It was fun to walk with neighbors along the Guadalupe River as the first leg of our new initiative. We discussed the future of our trail system and pointed out the significant progress made to restore and revitalize the area for public enjoyment. The Guadalupe River Park—San José's Central Park—has been a major focus, not only for the District 6 Council Office, but for our partners too, like the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy, Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services Department, San Jose Conservation Corps, San Jose Sharks, Downtown Association, Little Italy, and many other dedicated individuals and community organizations.
To celebrate San José’s Central Park—A Park Renewed, we are hosting a special “Picnic & Play Day” as our idea for how to ribbon-cut a public space this important to our community. Join us at Arena Green East (Shark’s Way near the pickleball courts) on March 21, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We’ll be activating the park with recreation, community connection, and plenty of fun for all ages. Bring your friends, family, and a picnic blanket as we celebrate this exciting new chapter together. It's a Bring Your Own Lunch and Stuff (BYOL&S) and we hope you will show up to have some fun with your neighbors.

| | Remembering Chris Bertucelli | |
It has been a long time since I've witnessed the public's uniform sadness over the loss of one of our own. The sudden passing of Chris Bertucelli of La Villa Delicatessen is heartbreaking. In the days since, the outpouring of stories, photos, and memories has been uplifting, inspiring, and even filled with humor—a reflection of the joy Chris brought to so many. Willow Glen, and San José, has lost part of its soul.
I have known Chris for years and his family for decades. With Chris being the front man for a hospitality dynasty, he made it cool to hobnob with the Sharks and niners, then turn around and feed their sworn enemies on a flight out of town. He clearly made it 'okay' to have food be the peacemaker. Chris made everyone feel welcome. Whether greeting longtime regulars or first-timers, he extended that same sly grin and service that became the hallmark of both the man and the business. His iconic "Chris Combo" became not only a customer favorite, but a touchstone for celebrations, game days, and everyday lunches. And I for one sure hope the recipe stays a family secret forever. It cracks me up to think how many times I have heard someone say, "Oh, I know the recipe, Chris told me," and I always say to myself, "No, he did not."
From local Little League teams to board rooms and locker rooms, his food and his spirit reached well beyond the deli's doors. Chris exemplified what it means to be a community man, always understanding that a strong neighborhood is built by people who invest in one another. Chris invested wholeheartedly. As a great example, the La Villa light displays and creative signage on holidays and sports seasons lifted all businesses on Lincoln Avenue by bringing a bit of spirit, whimsy, and fun.

His legacy will live on in the generations of families who have made La Villa part of their lives, in the conversations shared while waiting in line, and in the lasting sense of connection he helped cultivate along the Avenue.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Bertucelli family and the entire La Villa staff. Chris will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever woven into Willow Glen's story.

At the Mayor's State of the City, our D6 office recognized the Conservation Corps as the District 6 Community Hero. Since 1987, the Corps has invested in young adults as it strengthens the neighborhoods they serve—in D6, that impact is clear and visible. The Corp doesn't just talk about climate action or workforce development; they deliver real results on the ground that you can witness.
In the past month alone, the Conservation Corps dedicated over 5,000 hours to cleaning, maintaining, and improving our beloved Guadalupe River Park. The difference is magical, not only is it more beautiful and looking loved again, but people are also using the park. Runners, commuters, love birds, bikers, pickle ballers, futsallers, cricketers, and families of all ages are returning to our City's greatest Central Park.
In 2025, more than 800 corps members served our community, with over 155,000 hours of service, earning certifications, graduating high school, maintaining parks, and diverting nearly 3,000 tons of waste from landfills—roughly 150 fully loaded garbage trucks.
The Corps shows up. And they show us what successful public investment looks like. Please join me in congratulating our Community Heroes who have Stepped Up for D6.
| | San José’s Big Moment — And What Comes Next | |
Super Bowl week in San José brought an unmistakable energy to our City. Streets were vibrant, restaurants operated at capacity, and local businesses experienced a measurable surge in activity. Compared to a decade ago, the economic impact was notably stronger.
Over the course of the week, San José welcomed more than 459,000 visitors, driving record-setting retail and restaurant sales, increased airport traffic, and high hotel occupancy rates. As local columnist Sal Pizarro noted in The Mercury News, this moment represents "just the first quarter" for San José.
With March Madness arriving this month, we want to ensure that local business owners and community organizations are prepared to capitalize on the continued economic momentum. | Lights Back On at Wallenberg Tennis Courts | |
We’re pleased to share that, as of February 11, 2026, the lights at the Wallenberg Tennis Courts have been successfully restored. The lights will operate daily beginning 30 minutes before sunset and will turn off at 10PM.
After several years of inoperable lighting due to electrical complications, the District 6 Council Office led a coordinated, interjurisdictional effort in partnership with the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services Department and the San José Unified School District to restore service to the courts. We are appreciative of the partnership and shared commitment that made it possible to return this amenity to the community. We want to thank SJUSD Superintendent Nancy Albarran for her cooperation and support.
The City will continue to monitor the system to help ensure the lights remain operational for residents.
| The Alameda Resurfacing Project: What’s Ahead | |
The District 6 Council Team partnered with the Department of Transportation and members of The Alameda Business Association for an on-the-ground walk-through of The Alameda. With a 2+ mile resurfacing—Stockton Avenue to Hwy 880—planned for Summer 2026, we took a close look at current conditions and discussed practical improvements to enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall experience for everyone who lives, works, and shops along the corridor.
Investing in our business districts strengthens neighborhoods and improves economic activity. As planning continues, we welcome feedback from property owners, merchants, and residents on ways to improve safety, walkability, and long-term usability. We will also keep the community informed about upcoming meetings related to this project.
| Community Meeting: Dana & Naglee Signal Upgrades | |
Our office will be co-hosting a community meeting regarding Dana Ave and Naglee Ave Traffic Signal Improvements. The City's Department of Transportation will be upgrading the traffic signal at this intersection to improve walking, biking, and driving, supporting safer access to Trace Elementary, Rose Garden Library, and the Municipal Rose Garden.

Last Friday, we hosted a community walk along the Guadalupe River, bringing neighbors together for connection and conversation. This event is part of our broader Movin' with Mulcahy initiative, activating trails, parks, waterways, and neighborhood streets to generate pride, stewardship, and togetherness across District 6. By showing up and using our public spaces, we strengthen them.

At the February 24th Council Meeting, we honored S.J. Sharkie with a commendation from the City of San José. In 2025, Sharkie “reeled in” two of the highest honors in mascot history—induction into the Mascot Hall of Fame AND recognition as NHL Mascot of the Year—cementing Sharkie’s place as one of the most iconic and beloved mascots in ALL of professional sports. Sharkie is only the third NHL mascot ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Known as the “Hardest Working Fish in Sports,” Sharkie makes more than 450 community appearances each year, supporting local schools, charities, and countless initiatives through the Sharks Foundation. From birthday parties and bar mitzvahs to weddings and proms, Sharkie has left a lasting impression on generations of San Joseans.
