Welcome to a New Year of Learning!
Dear KLSD Families,

I hope all our students are enjoying the start of the new school year. With sports, clubs, and even open houses underway, it feels like we are well into the year. I have to remind myself that I’m writing this on just our 7 th day.

In light of our new start time at John Jay Middle School and all the planning that went into it, we feel it has been a very smooth start to this year. That’s important to us so that our primary focus can be on teaching and learning. My deepest thanks to all of my colleagues throughout the District who contributed to our successful opening.

At next week’s Board of Education meeting, we will continue a conversation about what learning looks like in 2019-2020. Perhaps you’ll consider joining us, or at least watching the video online if you can’t be with us in person.

Wishing everyone well,

Andrew Selesnick

District Sets Intentions for New Year
The middle school theater was full of energy and excitement on September 3. It was Opening Day—the day before the first day of classes—when educators and administrators gather in order to step into the new year together.

Superintendent Andrew Selesnick set the tone for 2019-20: to nurture and support the unique strengths of each individual.

Elementary Classes Bond Over Books and Shared Activities
Whether students are enjoying books together or playing a game that helps them to get to know one another, our elementary classes are full of an eagerness to learn and laughter.

Students and teachers are settling into weekly routines including art, music, and physical education. There are clear signs of caring, kind and respectful classroom communities in the making.
Eighth Grade Homebase Leaders Set a Welcoming Tone
"Listener, positive, inclusive, helpful.” These are some of the words 8 th grade Homebase Leaders use to describe what they want to help all students embody.

Each middle school student is assigned to a Homebase. The mixed-grade groups meet on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Homebase leaders, mentored by Assistant Principal Shantel Brooks, will facilitate team-building activities and thoughtful discussions throughout the year.
Congratulations, National Merit Semifinalists!
John Jay High School is extremely pleased and proud to announce that Jessica Leff and Johanna Schechter are National Merit Scholar Semifinalists for 2019.

"Their accomplishments are a testament to the high personal standards they have set for themselves and the commitment and perseverance necessary to achieve this level of distinction," said Dr. Steven Siciliano, principal of John Jay High School.
