A Note from our Executive Director
|
|
We have something for everyone during these winter months – from providing required education credits for farmers, to boredom buster kits for youth, to a new financial roadmap class, and nutrition education to help everyone lose those holiday pounds. There are a lot of unknowns in 2021 – but what is certain, is that the dedicated CCE Steuben staff are here to help you put knowledge to work.
In 2021, we are looking forward to a year of helping our local farmers be successful, supporting youth empowerment, and working with the community to be healthy via nutrition and financially. Here are a few things that will definitely be happening in 2021 as well:
- Workshops, onsite visits and communications to support local growers, farmers and agribusinesses
- Growing our Master Money Mentor program by marketing to people who need financial coaching
- Working with the Steuben County Agricultural Society to put in new 4-H bathrooms at the Steuben County Fairgrounds
- Launching a new healthy meal planning site from our SNAP-Ed Southern Finger Lakes Program called SNAP Express
- Expanding our Fruit and Vegetable Prescription program
- And more!
As always, a big thank you to our readers and the community for your support by partaking in our programs, reading our communications, and sharing our good work with others. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have at tsm223@cornell.edu or at 607-664-2301.

Someone at the Farm Tested Positive for COVID 19 - Now What?
|
|
Bilingual Dairy and Farm Business Management Specialists with the NWNY Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Program outline some key action items for a farm if they or an employee test positive for COVID-19. Even though hope is on the horizon with vaccines approved for use in the U.S., there is currently a rise in the number of cases and a time gap before all farms and their employees will be eligible to receive a vaccine.

Save Money and Eat Healthy this New Year with SNAP-Ed New York!
|
|
At SNAP-Ed New York, we’re all about saving time, saving money, and eating healthy – and for many, these are especially important this time of year. Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to save money? Check out these money-saving tips from MyPlate.gov for eating healthy on a budget!
-
Find deals right under your nose. Look for coupons with your receipt, as peel-offs on items, and on signs along aisle shelves.
-
Search for coupons. Many stores still send ads and coupons for promotion, so don’t overlook that so-called “junk mail.” You can also do a Web search for “coupons.” Go through your coupons at least once a month and toss out any expired ones.
-
Look for savings in the newspaper. Brand name coupons are found as inserts in the paper every Sunday — except on holiday weekends. Some stores will double the value of brand name coupons on certain days.
-
Join your store’s loyalty program. Signup is usually free and you can receive savings and electronic coupons when you provide your email address.
-
Buy when foods are on sale. Maximize your savings by using coupons on sale items. You may find huge deals such as “buy one get one free.”
-
Find out if the store will match competitors’ coupons. Many stores will accept coupons, as long as they are for the same item. Check with the customer service desk for further details.
-
Stay organized so coupons are easy to find. Sort your coupons either by item or in alphabetical order. Develop a system that’s easiest for you and make finding coupons quick and hassle-free. Ideas for coupon storage include 3-ring binders, accordion-style organizers, or plain envelopes.
-
Find a coupon buddy. Swap coupons you won’t use with a friend. You can get rid of clutter and discover additional discounts.
-
Compare brands. Store brands can be less expensive than some of the name brand foods. Compare the items to find better prices.
-
Stick to the list. Make a shopping list for all the items you need. Keep a running list on your phone, on the refrigerator, or in a wallet. When you’re in the store, do your best to buy only the items on your list.
Starting off the year with these simple changes will make a big difference in the long run! Find more tips for eating healthy on a budget, including recorded lessons and videos, here.
