Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Community Update: January 2022

A Message from Superintendent Reusser

As we begin a new year, I am excited to continue to provide educational opportunities for our students. Our Tri-County ROP programs for high school students are highly successful. Two such programs are our Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Culinary Arts. These programs provide high school students with the necessary training to be employable in our community.

Through the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Program, students are learning about the proper use of machinery tools, basic concepts behind drive train systems, designing and creating models using computer numerical control machines, basic introduction to robotic programmable welding applications and much more. Each student that successfully completes the course receives a certificate explaining their training and capabilities; last year 10 certificates were awarded.

The Advanced Culinary Arts program prepares students for careers in the food service and hospitality industry. Students learn hands-on, preparing food, learning about sanitation, culinary nutrition, demonstration of skills and much more. Upon completion of the course, students earn their Serve Safe Certificate, Food Handlers Certificate, Dishwashing/Chemical Certificate and a Knife Skills Certificate.

Giving our students the opportunity to not only learn a trade, but a chance to be hired on with local businesses has been extremely rewarding for us. We have many students who are excelling in these programs. We are excited to be opening up our Advanced Culinary Arts program for adults in our community in the new year.

New Director of Shady Creek: Christopher Little

Sutter County Superintendent of Schools is delighted to announce our new Director of Shady Creek, Christopher Little. Born and raised in Sacramento, Christopher attended 12 different schools in the Sacramento area before graduating from Folsom High School. Christopher is the son of an Assemblies of God Pastor and has an identical twin brother, Jason.

“I want Shady Creek to be everyone’s school,” Christopher said. “How can we make this your school? We are here to host your family events and serve our communities.”

Being raised in church, Christopher was involved in puppet ministry. At the age of 13, began playing the drums in the church band. Thus began his lifelong passion for music. When Christopher and Jason were 19 years old, they were signed by a label on the east coast for their Christian band, The Turnout. They toured with their band for 2 to 3 years.

Christopher and his brother, Jason, became involved with Woodleaf when the camp was short two counselors in 2006. Their mom called and asked if they would fill in since they were on a break from touring with their band. Christopher said that the minute he walked through the doors at Woodleaf, he felt at home. From that point forward, he and his brother, Jason, were known as Yeti and Sasquatch. 

Christopher met the “love of his life,” Shannon Cueva, when they served together as naturalists at Woodleaf in 2006. They were engaged in 2010 and married in 2011. As a couple, they have adopted two boys from Sutter County; Izaya, now 15 and Anthony, now 12. As a family, they enjoy spending time together playing sports, board games and disc golfing.

“As a parent, I have become a better teacher and manager,” Christopher said. “I am able to better serve not only the students, but the parents as well.”

Our Tri-County ROP High School Certified Nursing Program is highly successful. Students from a variety of high schools within Sutter County have graduated from this program and gone on to serve as a CNA within our community. Read further for success stories.

Danielle Gomez: 2021 Graduate

Danielle Gomez is a 2021 graduate of Yuba City High School and our SCSOS CNA Program. Since graduating from the program, she has been a full time student at CSU, Sacramento; she serves as a Certified Nursing Assistant during her school breaks.

“The SCSOS CNA Program made me realize that health care is where I want to serve,” Danielle said. “I enjoyed my instructors, Miss Kristen and Miss Irene because they have both served as nursing assistants and their experience was invaluable. I enjoyed the clinicals which gave me hands-on experience.”

Danielle has great aspirations for her future. Due to taking college classes during high school, she is currently scheduled to complete all of her pre-requisites for the nursing program by Fall of 2022. She plans to become a labor and delivery or pediatric nurse.

“I look forward to serving in a career where I know I’m helping people at the end of the day,” Danielle said.

We at SCSOS are so proud of Danielle for successfully completing the SCSOS CNA Program and working towards her future goals. We wish her all the best. 

Krizzia Chimes: 2020 Graduate

Krizzia Chimes is a 2020 graduate of River Valley High School and our SCSOS CNA Program. Since graduating from the program, she has worked as a CNA at Yuba City Post Acute. She recently was hired by Rideout Hospital.

“The SCSOS CNA Program was enjoyable for me,” Krizzia said. “The clinical hours were helpful and the feedback I received from the nursing home where I practiced was especially beneficial.”

Krizzia has great aspirations for her future. She is currently completing her pre-requisites for the nursing program at Yuba College. Her ultimate goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner and work in pediatrics.
