First, welcome to the first issue of the OSD Staff Families!
The purpose of this communication is to keep you up-to-date on information and success stories across the district, learn more about our teachers and students, and, most of all, allow you to use your voice. I hope you find the newsletter's content handy and informative every month.
Second, I want to thank you all for your patience and understanding throughout the school year. From battling COVID-19 cases in our schools to community engagement limitations, we have come together to make the best of this situation.
Along with ensuring our students have the tools to succeed, one of my top priorities is ensuring we have transparent, two-way communication with you, parents, and community members. This element helps us build trust and a content working relationship with you all.
Feel free to reach out to me at hatzenbelere@orting.wednet.edu if you want to chat about anything, including getting some things off your chest. Not only am I here for the students but you as well.

What's Happening in our Classrooms
At Orting High School, two special education classes worked together on a project.
In Ms. Bannan's Financial Math class, students were required to research about a career they would like to pursue after leaving high school.
With Mrs. Wagner's ELA 11th and 12th grade students, they did further research to determine best places to live, did their jobs require college or further education, cost of living, etc. Once they finish the research, students will be required to write an essay as part of their High School and Beyond Plan.
What's Happening outside of our Classrooms
Earlier this month, the OHS National Honor Society held their Annual River Cleanup.
They collected lots of trash, including 20 feet of heavy gauge electrical wire and a chandelier. Huge success!
In this section, you'll be able to ask one of our cabinet members a question you'd like answered, such as:
- What they're doing to solve a districtwide issue issue
- How they will help students and staff succeed in and out the classroom.
This is a great opportunity for you to connect with our district leaders!

Feeling Seen in School
By Amelia Albert - Orting Middle School
What does it mean to feel seen in your school to you?
Is it being the class clown?
Being popular?
Even being a bully?
Well, I am going to be answering this question for myself. First, how do I define being seen?
I define it as being present. How do I express being present? I express being present as
being involved in the mind and conversation of peers and staff alike.
I describe the feeling of being seen as being Heard by authority figures and classmates. By being reassured you are helping to make improvements in your school and pushing it forward, rather than backwards. I believe everyone's effort counts to make our school environment a refuge for whoever walks in the doors.
I personally have felt seen in my school in a positive and negative light. An example of this is when my peers elected me as sixth grade ASB president. I felt seen and heard by my peers and teachers. I felt present in my ideas for the future of my school. I've also felt present when I don't want to be present like a rumor about myself. Those are both ways how I experience being seen in my school. But we can make the good outweigh the bad by helping and treating each other with kindness and respect.

Q&A with Orting's 2022 Daffodil Festival Princess, Amber Burgess
1.What inspired you in wanting to become a Daffodil Festival Princess?
When my family and I moved here, we had no idea what the Daffodil Festival was. But when I saw the girls in the yellow dresses at my first parade, I fell in love. That’s when I knew I needed to be a princess just like them.
2. By wearing the Daffodil Festival Princess Crown, not only you represent the district, but the entire Orting community too. How does it feel to have that honor and responsibility?
I feel so blessed and excited to have this opportunity. I could not be more proud and honored to serve my community and represent us in a positive and uplifting light. I cannot wait to start my duties and community involvement with the program!
3.A big part of this role is community service. What draws you to it, and how does it make you a better human?
I love the way serving others makes me feel. It fills my heart with joy. Making my community a better place and impacting the lives of the members of the community teaches me how to be better for them and myself.
4.What do you hope your peers and younger students who may see you as a role model can learn from you?
I hope they can learn how to love others no matter what. I always spread love and grace to everyone I can. My hope is that as I spread love and positivity they can too.
Amber has been living in Orting since the 3rd grade. Her post-graduation aspirations are to attend a university in Washington state to pursue a bachelors in elementary education and a masters in administration and become a principal.
