Introducing New Dessert Wine from GIV: Lionne

Written by GIV Winemaker, David Shattuck

425024.jpg

We are very excited to feature a new Bridgehead dessert wine Lionne in this month's wine shipment. Lionne is the first tawny style dessert wine that we have produced. It's unique flavor is developed by allowing the wine to have measured oxygen exposure during the aging process. The slow oxidation of the wine causes the color to change to a brick red with hints of tan and aromas of toffee or sherry to become dominant. This wine is different from Velluto, our ruby style dessert wine, in that it has a more complex nose with less bright fruit aromas. The Lionne pairs beautifully with custard desserts like bread pudding or Crème brûlée.

This dessert wine pours a dusty brick color with a hint of tan in the meniscus. The initial aromas are of dried plum, honey, and praline. As this wine is exposed to air, it develops a melange of aromas including burnt orange, sherry, dried fig, and cocoa powder. While the wine is lightly sweet, it packs a soft mouthfeel with intriguing floral and honeyed fruit notes. The finish is ligering with wisps of saline, jerky, and plum that fade into a rich vanilla and toasted almond flavor.

Update on Wine Releases / Dates!

Written by GIV Winemaker, Ed Seikel

IMG_7612.jpg

We've received a lot of questions about when certain wines are going to be released (especially the next Symphony!) and it's so great to see such enthusiasm for our wines! Now that we have our next bottling lined up we can start thinking about our tentative release schedule for a few of the varietals, and I can now pass that information along so everyone can begin to get excited about some of our upcoming wines!

First and foremost, we are going to release the 2021 Symphony as soon as we are able. At this point that is looking like early to mid April. Up next will hopefully be the 2021 GIV Chardonnay in early May, followed by the 2021 GIV Chenin Blanc in Early June.

Overall this vintage of whites is shaping up to be really nice and we're very excited to get them into the tasting room. And if you are looking for something slightly sweet to pair with these cold winter evenings while you wait, look no further than the Bridgehead Dessert Wine Lionne in David's Wine Spotlight!

Winter Duties Resulting in Fruitful Yields

Written by Operations Manager, Joe Salman

rainrain.png

It can be cold outside now, our early winter rains have seemed to take a big pause, but what have we been doing since going back to December?

PRUNING!

Why bold and in all caps? Because this is the #1 main step in achieving quality grape production and resulting vine and fruit balance. On top of this it's also the most time consuming and costly aspect of the process. We are not just simply cutting back the size of the vine. It is a strict numbers game of leaving the proper amount of "fruitful" buds or nodes. From these fruitful buds we can roughly predict the amount of fruit clusters and get pretty close to a desired yield. Pretty cool isn't it?

There can be numerous methods of pruning and vine architecture. There are a number of machines to assist in the pruning nowadays, but the equation and result of fruitful buds per vine remains a consistent factor.

Take a look and cheers!
