We are very excited to feature a new Bridgehead dessert wine Lionne in this month's wine shipment. Lionne is the first tawny style dessert wine that we have produced. It's unique flavor is developed by allowing the wine to have measured oxygen exposure during the aging process. The slow oxidation of the wine causes the color to change to a brick red with hints of tan and aromas of toffee or sherry to become dominant. This wine is different from Velluto, our ruby style dessert wine, in that it has a more complex nose with less bright fruit aromas. The Lionne pairs beautifully with custard desserts like bread pudding or Crème brûlée.
This dessert wine pours a dusty brick color with a hint of tan in the meniscus. The initial aromas are of dried plum, honey, and praline. As this wine is exposed to air, it develops a melange of aromas including burnt orange, sherry, dried fig, and cocoa powder. While the wine is lightly sweet, it packs a soft mouthfeel with intriguing floral and honeyed fruit notes. The finish is ligering with wisps of saline, jerky, and plum that fade into a rich vanilla and toasted almond flavor.
