In light of the pope’s recent extension of the synod process for another year, we encourage you to join our related Virtual Table—see details from Maria Cimperman in the Virtual Table section below.
 
In this month’s Forum we feature two essays on the synodal project of listening to the voices from the global peripheries, sponsored by the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development. One from MT Dávila, in the Latin American Forum, emphasizes the ontological principle of listening in light of the report from Oceania, and one from guest contributor Meghan Clark, in the North American Forum, profiles the work and findings of the North American regional group. In the Junior Scholars’ Forum, Claudia Montes de Oca Ayala invites us to “hermeneutic metanoia” in response to the ways patriarchy has shaped believers’ well being, participation, and relationship with God. In the Asian Forum, Eric Genilo calls on church leadership in the Philippines to recover its prophetic voice to engage the current Marcos administration, and in the African Forum, Reginald Nalugala lifts up African styles of governance and Freirean community dialogue in response to rising global fundamentalisms. And in the European Forum, Petr Štica highlights the value of Pope Francis' reflections on political love for charting a path to peace.
 
We mourn the recent passing of South African theologian Albert Nolan, O.P. As we go to press we also mourn the loss of Shawnee Daniels-Sykes, plenary speaker at Sarajevo. We pray for them and all of the faithfully departed as we mark All Souls Day tomorrow.

In Memoriam


This month we remember Fr. Albert Nolan, O.P., who died on October 17. Nolan was a South African priest, deeply involved in the struggle against apartheid, and drafted the 1985 Kairos document urging nonviolent action. In his reflection for America, Anthony Egan describes Nolan as "a humble, easygoing person—until he started to preach or lecture." Nolan is also remembered for his contributions to theology, particularly his seminal 1976 work, Jesus Before Christianity.
Virtual Table on Synodality
All are welcome to the next Virtual Table meeting on Synodality. In July a small group met to share our experiences of the synodal process thus far. The energy for a synodal way of being church is growing, and we began asking – As ethicists, how might we serve the Church for this synodal time? We invite YOU to join us as we continue our discussion and possible calls from the Document for the Continental Phase of the Synod on Synodality (available October 27, 2022). No preparation is necessary, but you are welcome to read the document ahead of time.To join the conversation, please email Maria Cimperman at mcimperman@ctu.edu. The next VT on Synodality will be on November 18 at 2pm GMT (9am EST, 10pm Manilla PHST). A zoom link will be sent ahead of the meeting. Please join us!

Meeting of the Association of Moral Theologians of India Report

The 32nd annual conference and meeting of the Association of Moral Theologians of India (AMTI) was held at Dharmaram Vidya Kshethram, Bengaluru from 21st to 23rd October 2022. The conference attended by 46 members of the Association discussed the theme, "Towards a Synodal Church: Moral Implications." View a report from the conference.

Video Resource and Symposium on Nonviolence

Fall Series on the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative: engaging the book Advancing Nonviolence and Just Peace, speakers included Lisa Sowle Cahill, KC Choi, Eliane Lakam, Ken Butigan, Marie Dennis and Eli McCarthy. Over 45 universities participated. Recordings for use in teaching are available here.

Call for Papers

New Wine New Wineskins, an association for early-career Catholic moral theologians, has published a Call for Papers for its annual symposium. If you are a junior faculty (i.e., those who have not yet been granted tenure) or an advanced graduate student (i.e., doctoral candidates past their qualifying exams), please consider submitting a proposal. Save the date for The New Wine New Wineskins symposium, which will take place at the University of Notre Dame’s Moreau Seminary on July 27-30, 2023, with a keynote from Prof. Julie Hanlon Rubio.
