We’re thrilled to officially begin this new chapter in Petaluma!

Following a unanimous vote from the Petaluma City Council very early this morning, the Humane Society of Sonoma County was officially awarded a one-year contract to manage the Petaluma Animal Shelter!

We’re honored to serve the Petaluma community and excited to bring HSSC’s compassionate, innovative approach to animal care and community services to our new neighbors.

From April through August 2026, Marin Humane provided shelter and care for stray and surrendered animals in Petaluma, along with field services, wildlife rescue, cruelty and neglect investigations, and so much more. We’re incredibly grateful for the care they provided to Petaluma’s animals and for helping make this transition possible.

Over the past two weeks, while the shelter was temporarily closed, Sonoma County Animal Services formally assumed animal control duties and worked alongside HSSC and other local rescues to house and care for Petaluma animals.

“We are proud and excited to serve the Petaluma community with the highest possible standards of care for homeless animals, as well as pets and their people in need.

We are deeply grateful for the groundwork laid by Marin Humane over the past five months, making our transition into this role so much easier, and to the City, the County and all our colleagues in care across the region for their partnership in this important work.”

- Cynthia King,

HSSC Executive Director

The Shelter has been closed for the past two weeks, during which time Sonoma County Animal Services formally assumed animal control duties and worked with HSSC and other local rescues to house and care for Petaluma animals. We took in 11 animals from Petaluma during that time, including 6 requiring medical care from our Shelter Medical staff.

During that two-week hiatus, HSSC operations and facilities staff were on site preparing for the transition to shelter management.

“We share the City’s goal to make this transition as smooth as possible for Petaluma residents and, most importantly, to provide high quality and compassionate care for the animals in need,”

- Karrie Stewart, HSSC Senior Director of

 Operations and Programs.
