Welcome to the July Issue of HIIN The Know !
This month, HIIN The Know focuses on ventilator-associated harm events. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), approximately 800,000 patients are placed on mechanical ventilation in the United States each year and 5 percent to 10 percent develop a ventilator-associated event (VAE)—accounting for up to 80,000 patient harms annually. 1

In partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recommends that hospitals perform routine surveillance for VAEs to identify practice gaps that may lead to harms, even though it is not required (see resources section below).

Through your partnership with HSAG HIIN, your Clinical Improvement Advisors and HSAG HIIN Infection Preventionists can help ensure you are performing surveillance correctly and provide support and coaching to reduce VAEs .

Hospital Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI) Reports
Now Available
The Hospital HAI Reports are available for those hospitals that have conferred rights in the NHSN as of May 17, 2018. The HAI Report provides an overall summary of HAI measures, allowing your hospital to identify critical areas of focus and improvement to support progress toward the bold aims of the Partnership for Patients (PfP) HIIN program. This release of the Hospital HAI Report provides an update to previous reports containing your hospital’s NHSN HAI data from Q1 2017 through Q4 2017. To find your hospital’s Hospital HAI Report, select the Reports tab in the HSAG HIIN Secure Data Portal .
