Greetings!
After almost one year of construction, we will be ready to open the doors of the June Key Delta Community Center to the community in August of 2011! Our Grand Opening event will be held on Wednesday, August 10th from 4:00PM-8:00PM.
A project of the Portland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Piedmont Rose Connection, Inc., the June Key Delta Community Center (JKDCC) is a Living Building demonstration project seeking to serve as an example of how equity, economic development, and environmental stewardship can be achieved at the grassroots level. Located at 5940 N. Albina Street, the site is a former gas station and brownfield that has been transformed into a community center with meeting/event space, an art gallery, kitchen and community garden that will be utilized for the education and empowerment of the North/Northeast Portland community.

Who is June Key?
The June Key Delta Community Center is dedicated to the spirited work of the late June Roe Runnells Key, a member of the Portland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Professionally, she was a respected educator in the Portland Public Schools system. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta, she embodied the Sorority's focus on Economic Development as a part of the Five Point Programmatic Thrust. It was June Key's vision and leadership that persuaded the Chapter to purchase the property at 5940 N. Albina Street in 1992.
June Key was one of the ten members of Delta Sigma Theta to charter the Beta Psi Chapter in Portland, Oregon on March 25, 1945. Chapter meetings were held in member's homes for many years. As the Chapter grew it became necessary to locate larger rooms for the meeting sites. Problems occurred frequently when sites were not available or charges were imposed. June Key's mission became the search for a permanent meeting site large enough to accommodate 40 to 60 people.
June Key's search resulted in the location of a long abandoned Arco Gas Station & convenience store on the corner of North Albina and Ainsworth streets, across from a popular Portland park with a beautiful, formal rose garden. The property itself was unsightly, trashed, boarded up, and piled high with rubbish. Arco disposed of this surplus property and sold it to June Key for a very modest price. It took a great deal of sweeping, mopping, painting and trips to the dump by members, friends and "honey do's" to get the place acceptable enough to be a meeting place for the Chapter and create a safe space for the surrounding community.
It is our honor to dedicate the June Key Delta Community Center to our Soror! Her contribution to our Chapter and service to the community will continue to inspire future generations of leaders in North Portland.
