Habitat LA Breaks Ground on Affordable Housing Project in Washington Neighborhood


On December 8, 2022, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles broke ground on its Locust Avenue development in the Washington neighborhood of Long Beach. The development will include 36 condominium units, two of which will be reserved for very-low-income residents, while 20 will be for low-income residents, and the remaining 14 will be market rate.



Since 1990, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles has focused on increasing affordable housing stock through building, rehabilitating and repairing homes across the region, including 156 homes in Long Beach. In recent years, Habitat LA has on addressing both a lack of affordable housing and disinvestment in neighborhood infrastructure on the Washington neighborhood. The organization celebrated surpassing 1,000 homes built in November.

City Council votes to Open Winter Shelter at Community Hospital


On December 13, 2022, Long Beach City Council voted to lease space at Community Hospital for its annual winter homeless shelter, which will operate at the site through March. The city will lease the property from MWN Community Hospital LLC and sub-lease the property to a nonprofit to run a shelter of about 81 beds. MWN will be paid about $45,350 per month and an additional $25,000 for startup costs to make repairs and improvements to the facility. Community Hospital is expected to open as a winter shelter the week of December 19 and end operating as a shelter on March 31.

 ‘High-end’ Hangar Under Construction at Long Beach Airport


On December 8, 2022, Atlantic Aviation, an aeronautical services provider at Long Beach Airport, broke ground on a $14 million “high-end” hangar at the facility located at 3250 Airflite Way. The project includes a 30,000-square-foot hangar and 3,000-square-foot adjoining office near the company’s existing facilities on the west side of the airfield near Wardlow Road. The project is slated for completion during the first quarter of 2024, with construction being managed by Aeroplex/Aerolease Group.
