Welcome to the March Issue of HIIN The Know !
This month, HIIN The Know focuses on surgical site infections (SSIs). SSIs are the most prevalent hospital-acquired infection (HAI) resulting in increased postoperative mortality, length of stay, and cost of care. 1 In an effort to reduce SSIs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the CDC Guideline for the Prevention of Surgical Site Infection, 2017. 2 These new guidelines include several significant, evidence-based changes that facilities should implement into practice.

HSAG HIIN recommends the following actions:
  • Complete a side-by-side comparison of the 2017 guidelines and current order sets, policies, and procedures.
  • Develop a “roll-out” to ensure all staff members are educated on the changes and the associated modifications in practice.
  • Perform rounds regularly with a focus on monitoring adherence.
  • Provide additional education and feedback to address gaps and barriers to adherence.
  • Be aware of guidelines and evidence-based recommendations from other professional societies, such as the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), and Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
As part of the HSAG HIIN, your hospital has access to no-cost SSI resources to support your implementation plans. Please reach out to your Clinical Improvement Advisor (CIA) to receive your personalized, no-cost assistance today.

Hospital HAI Reports Now Available
The HAI Feedback Report is available for those hospitals that have conferred rights in NHSN as of February 16, 2018. The feedback report provides an overall summary of HAI measures, allowing your hospital to identify critical areas of focus and improvement to support progress toward the bold aims of the Partnership for Patients (PfP) HIIN program. This release of the HAI Feedback Report provides an update to previous reports containing your hospital’s NHSN HAI data from Q4 2016 through Q3 2017. In addition to your progress, the report offers your hospital’s SIR, Cumulative Attributable Difference (CAD), Device Utilization Ratio (DUR), and Standardized Utilization Ratio (SUR).
