Global Learning for Health Equity Grantees Convene in Baltimore
The Global Learning for Health Equity Network (GL4HEN), led by Yolanda Ogbolu, the Bill and Joanne Conway Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and Virginia Rowthorn, Assistant Vice President for Global Engagement and Executive Director of CGE, is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded effort to build a framework that will support the adaptation of health equity interventions from overseas to U.S. settings with a strong focus on community engagement and bidirectional learning.
In late September, the seven GL4HEN grantees convened in Baltimore to work and learn together. The toured Baltimore with community site visits and learned about the Global Learning Framework.
The GL4HEN grants are designed to help community-based organizations and health equity advocates learn about creative approaches and initiatives from countries around the world that can inform their efforts to advance health equity in the U.S. Projects include:
- Global Learning for Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health
- 4 Pillars Model: Centering Women's Access through Agency
- Global Exploration of Age Friendly & Aging Supportive Communities
- Global Learning in Addressing Trauma-Cambodia/US Immigrant Communities
- Community-based Palliative Care Model
- The Hood Exchange Inaugural Racial Healing Cohort
- B'more Global at Community Walk through Theater - Empowering Community Block by Block

Application Deadline Extended to Alicia and Yaya Initiative in Global Aging Research Fellowship
Applications Due November 1
The Alicia and Yaya Initiative in Global Aging Research is a UMB Graduate School program of research, service, and teaching in the fields of gerontology and aging. The initiative provides support to UMB and University of Costa Rica (UCR) students and scholars to study and learn together through fellowships, collaborative learning opportunities, symposia, seed funding, and other means of financial support.
The application deadline has been extended to Nov. 1 for the following Alicia and Yaya Initiative in Global Aging Research Fellowship programs:
Alicia and Yaya Initiative in Global Aging Research Faculty Exchange Fellows
UCR and UMB faculty members with an established record of research in aging or a related field are encouraged to use the fellowship to conduct research at the partner institution as part of a collaborative research team or using shared data and resources.
Alicia and Yaya Fellows
Graduate and professional students and predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers can apply to study at UMB or UCR in individualized programs that include courses, mentoring, and participation in research programs.

Graduate School Tiri Scholarship: Applications Open for Full Scholarship for UMB Affiliates Outside the U.S.
The Henriatta Selle Tiri Scholarship program of the UMB Graduate School is a competitive full-tuition scholarship program for UMB affiliates/collaborators based outside the US. Eligible affiliates can enroll in fully paid M.S. Health Science and M.S. in Global Health, offered entirely online to allow students flexibility in balancing work and school.
Eligible applicants include:
- Staff of Maryland Global Initiatives Corporation (MGIC) international branch and affiliate country offices
- UMB-associated local organization staff, such as BUMMHI, Ciheb-Kenya, IHV-Nigeria, and Ciheb-Zambia
- Staff working for implementing partners who have a subaward or contract from a UMB-funded initiative in a non-U.S. setting, such as CVD-Mali
- International collaborators who have worked with UMB faculty and staff for two or more years on a joint project, such as research, service delivery, or an educational exchange

UMB chooses to be bold and courageous by living out our core values through the creation of the University’s inaugural strategic plan for diversity and inclusion, titled “Weaving University REPS: Diversity Action and Accountability Plan.” The plan represents a road map for the University’s future of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Nourish & Connect Dinner Series: Cultural Wellness
November 30 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Intercultural Center
Nourish & Connect is a student dinner series that supports students holistically and fosters community support. Students are invited to share a meal and connect with fellow UMB students from other schools and programs for thoughtful discussions centered around themes of personal growth, cultural wellness, healthy relationships, and finding joy. Nourish & Connect dinners are co-facilitated by peer health and wellness educators from URecFit and Wellness and Student Affairs staff members.

Welcome New CGE Employee, Emily Markes
The Center for Global Engagement has a new face in the office: Emily Markes, Senior International Scholar Advisor.
Emily Markes is Assistant Director of International Services and works with visa sponsorship for international faculty and staff, including J-1, H-1B, TN, and E-3. She advises hiring units at UMB and international scholars on these visas and serves as the backup F-1 student advisor. Emily provides support to international scholars and students before and during their visa sponsorship at UMB.
Emily previously worked in similar roles at the University of Maryland, College Park and at Cornell University. Before working in higher education, Emily taught Spanish in Maryland, New York, California, and the West Indies, and was an English language instructor in Japan. She has studied in Argentina and Spain and worked at a nonprofit organization in Peru. Emily obtained a Master’s in Education from the University of Maryland, College Park and a B.A. degree in Spanish from Wellesley College.

CGE Shares Its Knowledge at Academic Conferences
This fall, CGE staff have been busy presenting at academic conferences and sharing their expertise.
On November 9, Amy Ramirez, Executive Director of Global Learning and International Services at CGE, will be a speaker on Extra Burdens: Difficulty of Health & Wellness for International Postdocs at the virtual National Postdoctoral Association International Equity Summit. Registration is open through November 8.
On October 13, Amy Ramirez and Carlos Faerron Guzmán, Associate Professor of Global Health at the Graduate School and a CGE Senior Fellow, presented Global Learning in Professional Education: UMB Costa Rica Faculty Development Institute at the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) 2023 Conference on Global Learning.
On October 20, Virginia Rowthorn, Assistant Vice President for Global Engagement and Executive Director of CGE, presented at the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH) Annual Meeting. Her presentation on Reciprocal Innovation as a Strategy to Democratize Global Health was part of its Committee on Global Health Symposium II's From Concept to Practice: How to Sustainably Democratize/Decolonize Global Health.

Apply for Year-Long Global Health Fellowship Opportunity
Application Deadline November 1
Applications are being accepted for the Integrated Network of Scholars in Global Health Research Training (INSIGHT) Program through November 1.
This opportunity supports mentored research training in global health for eligible U.S. and low- and middle-income country (LMIC) postdoctoral (MD, MD/PhD, ScD, or equivalent degree) fellows and U.S. doctoral candidates. Participants spend a year abroad at one of 27 affiliated institutions across 20 countries conducting research.

Attend a Virtual Session as Part of CUGH's Virtual Global Health Week

Before its annual conference in March, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) is holding virtual satellite sessions as part of Virtual Global Health Week. Topics include climate change, vaccine hesitancy, global health in low- and middle-income countries, and capacity strengthening. Attendance is free.
