Dear #Positivity Friends,
Happy New Year! In honor of hitting the quarter mark of the 21st century, let’s have a little think about one of the most complicated and controversial subjects of our lifetime: artificial intelligence.
The arrival of ChatGPT in late 2022 felt like a masked intruder bursting through your front door in the middle of the night. At first, you’re paralyzed with terror. Then the survival instinct kicks in and you think frantically about how to defend yourself. When you realize you have no means of protection, you back into a dark corner and watch silently while it prowls around your house.
Many people have been stuck in that dark corner for the last two years, too scared to come out and get a good look at the intruder. We may have caught little whiffs of information from the media about artificial intelligence (It’s coming for our jobs! It’s ruining our kids’ education!), but we’ve never ventured to understand it, never mind experiment with it. Let’s try to change that in 2025.
A good place to start is to read Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI by Ethan Mollick. Next, give AI try. Go to ChatGPT.com and use one of the basic functions, such as “Make a plan,” to see what it can do for you. For example, tell it you’d like to plan a garden or an exercise program. [Rabbit hole alert: you may discover you burn a couple of hours once you start this little exercise!]
There are a jillion ways to dabble with AI—the idea is just to get more comfortable with its presence in our day-to-day lives. Go ahead and be cautious about it because there’s plenty we don’t know yet about where it’s going to take us. But ready or not, the AI-driven future is here. So let's try to be a part of the adventure not just a nervous spectator!

Four-year-old Elliot Hole from Kent, England has been fighting leukemia for most of his life. He has been through chemotherapy and lengthy stays at three area children’s hospitals for his treatments. Knowing from experience what it feels like to be in the hospital during the holidays, as this Christmas approached, Elliot told his mom, Harley, that he wanted to bring some cheer to other children in this un-cheery situation. She set up an Amazon Wishlist and collected more than 400 gift bags filled with games, bubbles, stickers, and chocolate that were distributed by local volunteers who gladly supported Elliot’s mission. His mom is grateful for the goodwill and enthusiasm shown by their community. “He is a very kind little boy. He is [also] quite strong willed and just powers through.” This little Santa will complete his own treatment in March.
The Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) has recently become a destination for the young, thanks to a $3.5 million gift from an anonymous donor that allows children ages 12 and under to visit the museum for free. One of the largest art museums in the United States, MAM’s 25,000-piece collection includes the work of Impressionists such as Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Camille Pissaro, and modern artists such as Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. MAM also houses one of the world’s largest collections of paintings by Georgia O’Keefe, who was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. MAM chief development officer André Allaire said, “Every day, our youngest museum visitors will be able to access, engage with, and learn from world-class exhibitions and programs free of charge thanks to the generosity of an individual who believes in the power of art to strengthen our community.”
Stephen Knight lost his family, his job, and his home to a meth addiction. In 2011, he entered treatment and began his road to recovery. One day, a friend came to him with her dog, Jayde. His friend had relapsed and was there to ask Knight for a ride to an animal shelter because she couldn’t find anyone to care for her dog while she received treatment. Knight says he and Jayde exchanged a long look that altered Knight’s life forever. Now at almost 14 years sober, he has helped more than 1,200 dogs and their owners through his Dallas-based nonprofit Dogs Matter. The organization finds foster families for dogs whose owners are in treatment, covers pet care expenses for the foster families, and provides post-treatment assistance to the dog owners so they can continue their recovery. As the winner of CNN’s 2024 Hero of the Year award, Knight received $100,000 to support his organization’s important work. When accepting the award, Knight said, “This means everything. I represent so much here…the recovery community, the dog rescue community…this is going to take us to the next level.”
