Welcome back to the Empowering Latino Futures (ELF) Book Club!
Happy New Year! With this new year, I think we all need to take a breather and hope that the gloomy days are behind us. Let’s hug our loved ones a little tighter and send positivity out into the world. A new year brings renewed energy, fresh possibilities, and the opportunity to continue uplifting our stories and our community.
I’m so excited to welcome you back. Think of this as our space to celebrate and explore the rich and diverse world of Latino literature together.
First, I want to apologize for the delay in sending this newsletter. The entire ELF team has been busy preparing for the Latino Book and Family Festival as well as processing entries for the 2026 International Latino Book Awards. It’s been an exciting and full season for us! Even so, we know how important it is to keep moving forward. Showcasing our voices, stories, and art is more necessary than ever, and sharing books by and about Latinos is something we feel deeply committed to. So many authors have poured their hearts into powerful works, chasing the dream that their stories will be seen, heard, and celebrated.
Each month, I’ll personally share book recommendations from our incredible archive of award-winning authors and members of the International Society of Latino Authors. You’ll also find insightful reviews from educators and librarians, along with inspiring content that highlights the profound contributions of Latino literature to the world.
There will also be book raffles—be sure to look below for details on how to enter!

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Con este nuevo año, creo que todos necesitamos tomar un respiro y confiar en que los días grises han quedado atrás. Abracemos más fuerte a nuestros seres queridos y enviemos positividad al mundo. Un nuevo año trae energía renovada, nuevas posibilidades y la oportunidad de seguir elevando nuestras historias y nuestra comunidad.
Estoy muy emocionada/o de darles la bienvenida nuevamente. Piensen en este espacio como el lugar donde celebramos y exploramos juntos el rico y diverso mundo de la literatura latina.
Primero, quiero disculparme por la demora en enviar este boletín. Todo el equipo de ELF ha estado muy ocupado preparándose para el Latino Book and Family Festival, así como procesando las inscripciones para los Premios Internacionales del Libro Latino 2026. ¡Ha sido una temporada intensa y emocionante para nosotros! Aun así, sabemos lo importante que es seguir avanzando. Dar visibilidad a nuestras voces, historias y arte es más necesario que nunca, y compartir libros escritos por y sobre latinos es algo con lo que estamos profundamente comprometidos. Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote – A Powerful and Moving Performance

The recent production of Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote, based on the beloved book by Duncan Tonatiuh, was nothing short of extraordinary. Inspired by Tonatiuh’s beautifully illustrated and deeply moving story, the play brought an important and emotional narrative to life in a way that captivated the entire audience.
Commissioned by Bodhi Tree Concerts, this production is a meaningful and important addition to our community. By bringing this story to the stage, Bodhi Tree Concerts has created an opportunity for audiences of all ages to better understand immigration and the many challenges it brings to families. It is art with purpose—thought-provoking, compassionate, and deeply relevant.
What made this performance especially unique was its operatic storytelling style. Rather than relying solely on traditional dialogue, much of the story was told through powerful, opera-style singing. The soaring voices and expressive musical numbers added depth and intensity to each scene, drawing the audience into Pancho’s journey in a profound and unforgettable way. The music didn’t just accompany the story—it became the heartbeat of the production.
The score, composed by Anthony Davis, was nothing short of magnificent. His music carried the emotional weight of the story so beautifully that it brought the audience to its feet for a well-deserved standing ovation. The sweeping compositions and stirring vocals elevated every moment, making the performance even more impactful.
At its core, this play helps the audience understand the woes of immigration through the eyes of a child. Experiencing the story from Pancho’s perspective makes the themes of separation, longing, uncertainty, and hope deeply personal. At times, it truly feels like there is a knot in your throat as you witness his courage and innocence in the face of hardship.
I took my 6-year-old son, Oliver, to see the production, and he was completely in awe. He was captivated from beginning to end, and during various parts of the show, he became very emotional. It was powerful to see how deeply the story resonated with him. The performance sparked meaningful questions and conversations afterward, helping bring knowledge to children in a way that encourages them to think about topics that are so important nowadays.
In an especially generous gesture, the proceeds from the performance were donated to Border Angels, a nonprofit organization that provides water and food drops in the desert to migrants crossing the border as well as other services. This act of giving further reflected the heart behind the production—compassion in action.
From the stunning vocal performances to the heartfelt acting and thoughtful staging, this play was truly great. It honored Duncan Tonatiuh’s original story while adding a powerful musical dimension that elevated the experience even further.
Overall, it was an unforgettable experience—moving, educational, and inspiring. Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote not only entertained but opened hearts and minds, reminding us of the power of storytelling to build empathy and understanding within our community.

La reciente producción de Pancho Rabbit y el Coyote, basada en el querido libro de Duncan Tonatiuh, fue sencillamente extraordinaria. Inspirada en la historia bellamente ilustrada y profundamente conmovedora de Tonatiuh, la obra dio vida a una narrativa importante y emotiva de una manera que cautivó a toda la audiencia.
Comisionada por Bodhi Tree Concerts, esta producción es una adición significativa y valiosa para nuestra comunidad. Al llevar esta historia al escenario, Bodhi Tree Concerts ha creado una oportunidad para que públicos de todas las edades comprendan mejor la inmigración y los muchos desafíos que trae a las familias. Es arte con propósito: reflexivo, compasivo y profundamente relevante.
Lo que hizo esta presentación especialmente única fue su estilo narrativo operístico. En lugar de depender únicamente del diálogo tradicional, gran parte de la historia fue contada a través de un poderoso canto al estilo de la ópera. Las voces imponentes y los números musicales expresivos añadieron profundidad e intensidad a cada escena, atrayendo al público al viaje de Pancho de una manera profunda e inolvidable. En un gesto especialmente generoso, los fondos recaudados de la presentación fueron donados a Border Angels, una organización sin fines de lucro que proporciona agua y alimentos en el desierto a migrantes que cruzan la frontera, además de ofrecer otros servicios. Este acto de generosidad reflejó aún más el corazón detrás de la producción: compasión en acción.

to entertain and educate young readers. Mrs. Rincón combines engaging narratives with cultural
richness, making it a perfect read for children eager to explore stories and riddles in both
Spanish and English, and a wonderful addition to any child's library. Martha Nguyen's beautiful
illustrations are vibrant, warm, and engaging, bringing the stories to life with colorful visuals.
The discussion questions and fun activities encourage curiosity and critical thinking. The
bilingual format fosters language development and enriches the reader's understanding of Latin
American traditions and folklore. The stories often carry moral lessons subtly woven into the
narrative, which promote social-emotional learning, empathy, and understanding of values such
as kindness, honesty, and perseverance.
Mrs. Rincón beautifully integrates her cultural heritage into the stories, riddles, and traditional
cooking recipes, providing children with a window into Hispanic culture. This exposure helps
foster cultural pride in bilingual or multicultural children and promotes cross-cultural awareness
among all readers. Mrs. Rincón and I had the opportunity to present the book in a bilingual
event, where we explored adding music to the stories that she narrated, and it was a delightful
experience for families and their children. The author shared her stories, rhymes, and songs
with great sensitivity, and I had the honor of accompanying her on my violin, allowing the music
to blend with the storytelling. This combination created a magical and joyful atmosphere that
brought each story to life and captivated everyone present.
"Cuentos para ti y para mí” is a cultural tribute and gift to those with Hispanic heritage and those who
want to learn more about it. As a parent, I have been able to use it to share songs and popular
sayings with my son, who is growing up bilingual. It has been a beautiful tool to foster his
bilingualism, as well as enjoying and learning as a family.

Un corazón que late en verso: Pedro Garfias en la voz de María de Alva

María de Alva es una narradora innata, sus palabras fluyen tejiendo las diversas historias
que conforman esta novela. La autora acaricia el lenguaje, y parece que las páginas se
quedan cortas ante el torrente de palabras.
La novela enmarca una historia central: la vida del poeta Pedro Garfias. De forma
magistral, la autora dibuja a su personaje, otorgándole una voz para que sea él quien nos
narre su vida, desde la infancia hasta sus últimos suspiros. Así, podemos apreciar el interior de sus múltiples facetas: poeta, bohemio, enamorado, enfermo, amante, esposo, declamador, aventurero y amigo.
El mar se desprende de la vida del poeta, configurando la historia de un viajero que
emigra de la España fracturada por la guerra y la dictadura, hacia un México que le ofrece
la esperanza de una vida a salvo. Es puente esencial en el escenario de sus viajes, en busca de un refugio donde acomodarse.
Llega a Monterrey, el espacio norestense que lo cobijó en la librería Cosmos. Su dueño,
Don Alfredo Gracia, le permitió vivir allí, en una buhardilla rodeado de libros y fantasmas.
La librería le brindó orden al caos por un tiempo. De Alva rescata este espacio casi
olvidado, un lugar que regaló a la ciudad la posibilidad de la lectura, ediciones españolas y
argentinas, volúmenes especializados, poesía traducida de múltiples lenguas, y libros de
arte. Un espacio cuya partida dejó una pérdida incalculable, que dio un hogar al poeta.
El corazón extraviado de Pedro Garfias se conjuga en el presente con el corazón
extraviado su autora, quien nos entrelaza su propia historia, el relato de una cardiopatía.
Dos corazones que, unidos, se encuentran en un mismo presente: uno por su abrazo a la
poesía, el otro por su entrega a la narrativa.
