Welcome back to the Empowering Latino Futures (ELF) Book Club!
I’m so excited to welcome you back. Think of this as our space to celebrate and explore the rich and diverse world of Latino literature together.
First, I want to apologize for the delay in sending this wonderful newsletter—our award season is in full swing! The International Latino Book Awards are here and the entire ELF team (myself included) has been swamped. But we know how important it is to keep pushing forward. The showcasing of our voices, stories, and art is more necessary than ever, and sharing books by or about Latinos is something we feel deeply committed to. So many authors out there have poured their hearts into powerful works, chasing the dream that their stories will be seen, heard, and celebrated.
Each month, I’ll personally share book recommendations from our incredible archive of award-winning authors and members of the International Society of Latino Authors. You’ll also find insightful reviews from educators and librarians, plus inspiring content that highlights the profound contributions of Latino literature to the world.

Celebrate Latino Voices: The International Latino Book Awards
Since 1998, the International Latino Book Awards (ILBA), created by Empowering Latino Futures (ELF), has been honoring the best books by and about Latinos—more than all other U.S. book awards combined! Every year, hundreds of entries are reviewed by dozens of judges to celebrate excellence across 87 categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Children’s, Poetry, eBooks, Design, Translation, and more. Works are accepted in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or bilingual formats.
The ILBA also honors legends of literature and community with the special Legend Awards, recognizing icons like Isabel Allende, Rudolfo Anaya, Dolores Huerta, and Victor Villaseñor.
Why it matters: the ILBA shines a spotlight on today’s literary stars and inspires tomorrow’s writers. From fewer than 300 books published by Latino authors in 1980 to over 35,000 today, Latino literature is thriving—and the ILBA is at the heart of it.
Plus, the ILBA is ELF’s only fundraiser, supporting programs that empower Latino authors and readers across the U.S.

Celebra las Voces Latinas: Los Premios Internacionales de Literatura Latina
Desde 1998, los Premios Internacionales de Literatura Latina (ILBA), creados por Empowering Latino Futures (ELF), han honrado los mejores libros escritos por y sobre latinos, ¡más que todos los demás premios literarios en Estados Unidos juntos! Cada año, cientos de obras son evaluadas por decenas de jueces para reconocer la excelencia en 87 categorías: Ficción, No Ficción, Literatura Infantil, Poesía, Libros Electrónicos, Diseño, Traducción y más. Se aceptan obras en inglés, español, portugués o formatos bilingües.
Los ILBA también reconocen a leyendas de la literatura y la comunidad con los especiales Legend Awards, honrando a íconos como Isabel Allende, Rudolfo Anaya, Dolores Huerta y Víctor Villaseñor.

Her big, bouncy extended family makes a colorful hullabaloo, flooding Mariel with various hues of emotion. Mami suggests a breather in the garden, where Mariel and Papi—a fellow gentle, quiet soul—paint together, using soothing colors that restore a sense of inner harmony. But when Mariel presents her artwork to Santiago as a birthday gift, he impishly rips it up sending her adrift on an ocean of tears. She paints a boat that carries her on a dreamlike journey through kaleidoscopic waves to a tropical island where fruit trees and exotic animals help her process her fear of disconnection and need for belonging. Fortified, she sails home with renewed appreciation for her family who welcome her with an “offering” that mends what was torn. Abundis’s use of color synesthesia as a conceit is sensitively handled in this lyrical tale of a child going through the rigors of emotional self-regulation. Illustrations with a riot of colors create a sense of movement and comfort.

Como educadora y gestora cultural, Devers utiliza su poesía para compartir la riqueza de su herencia dominicana y afrodescendiente, celebrando la diversidad y reivindicando la importancia de sus raíces en un mundo que a menudo olvida o minimiza su impacto.
A lo largo del libro, Devers fusiona el español, inglés y spanglish, creando una atmósfera vibrante y rica en matices que refleja la compleja experiencia de ser latino en Estados Unidos. Esta mezcla de lenguajes es, a su vez, un acto de resistencia cultural, un grito de orgullo por la herencia caribeña, afrolatina y el proceso de adaptación a una nueva vida en un país extranjero. A través de un lenguaje poderoso, coloquial y directo, la autora nos recuerda la importancia de la historia olvidada y la identidad compartida, La autora se enorgullece de su identidad y celebra la herencia africana que fluye en sus venas, afirmando con firmeza que no importa cuántos intenten borrar o reescribir su historia: “mis huellas son una remezcla que el tiempo no puede borrar”.
En sus versos, Adriana recoge las huellas de un pasado lleno de luchas, pero también de victorias, y las proyecta hacia el futuro, donde espera que las nuevas generaciones se sientan tan orgullosas de su herencia como ella. La obra es una reflexión profunda sobre la identidad, el legado y la necesidad de recordar y celebrar de dónde venimos para poder avanzar hacia el futuro con orgullo y fortaleza.
Huellas de Una Memoria Perdida es un homenaje a la cultura afrodescendiente, a la fuerza de las mujeres latinas y a la memoria que se resiste a ser olvidada.
