Saltchuk, headquartered in Seattle, is a privately owned family of diversified freight transportation, marine service, and energy distribution companies. A few days ago, Jamie Kim Manager of Revenue Accounting for Saltchuk Aviation Services sent this email to NACM:
"Aloha Air Cargo has flown supplies for free equating to over 250,000 lbs. We have moved staff to Maui to assist with receiving the air freight and have added flights to our schedule to accommodate charter requests. We had to end the offer of free shipping to residents wanting to send supplies to friends, family and loved ones as our warehouse was completely full. The outpouring from everyone is really impressive and Aloha spirit is alive and well beyond our shores."
From the company: "During the past week, Saltchuk’s Hawaii companies have worked tirelessly to attend to their colleagues and community in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires in Hawaii. We are grateful to report that all team members are safe, and miraculously, the fire spared the Minit Stop/Ohana Fuels store just above the historic Lahaina town center. Thankfully, Maui’s air and seaports have been unaffected, allowing air cargo and barge access without interruption.
The Hawaii teams’ quick response in partnering with local and federal agencies is commendable. Young Brothers, Aloha Air Cargo, and Naniq have worked tirelessly to ensure supplies make it to Maui as quickly as possible. Hawaii Petroleum restored fueling operations this last weekend in Lahaina, providing critically needed fuel for generators and emergency services. We want to recognize the commitment and dedication of the people who make it possible.
There has been an outpouring of concern for our teams in Hawaii. While we count our blessings that everyone is safe and accounted for, we are sobered to report that approximately 18 of our Saltchuk family lost their homes and belongings in the wildfires."
|
|
As we continue to hear from other members and customers, we pass along their reports and approaches to assisting in the monumental task of providing relief to the Maui people and help in rebuilding Lahaina.

"Aroma of Tacoma" to become footnote in history?
|
The "smell of money" may be become a thing of the past as WestRock's Tacoma paper mill is set to close in September due to high operating costs and need for capital investment. The mill employees 400 people.
With roots going back to 1888 and the Northern Pacific Railroad, the mill has been part of the Tacoma waterfront for more than a century.

Washington Real Estate Update
|
Housing supply levels are unlikely to improve enough to meet demand until rates drop significantly.
According to Windemere's in-house economist, prices can be expected to rise modestly as we move through the second half of 2023. Rising list and sale prices, shorter time on market, and higher pending and closed sales will all offset higher mortgage rates.

Alaska Real Estate Update

While the housing market in Alaska is showing signs of warming up, it is still threatened by a possible rise in interest rates and a housing market recession.

Washington leads the nation in fuel prices.
Enter Washington State Senate Bill 5126—passed in 2021, this bill is part of an ambitious package of legislation that is aimed at cutting emissions in Washington State by up to 50% in the next nine years. It’s a wonderful goal, of course, but it comes with a downside.
As of January 1, 2023, Washington State’s gas tax increased by $0.46 to $0.95 per gallon. The tax will continue to rise, with the goal being a total increase of $0.80 a gallon by 2030. The aim of this is to drastically cut emissions, which is an important priority on a global level—but takes a major toll on Washingtonians’ wallets.
Below is the average statewide price per gallon as of August 18, 2023.
Prices vary by location. Seattle - $5.19; Anchorage - $4.45; Honolulu $4.67
