Before we explore this month's articles we are pleased to announce the launch of the membership sector's first dedicated job website:

For the first time you can view the latest membership organisation and association vacancies (at all career stages), post your CV and/or advertise a vacancy all in one place. For further details and information about our launch competition please see below!

In our final eUpdate of the year we find out if marketing on Facebook can directly help to recruit new members, we update you on the MAP project, we review feedback from our Direct Debit training event and catch-up on the latest online discussion.

Can Facebook generate new members?

Good question! Our recent web survey indicates that although 90% of us now offer online networking opportunities we remain sceptical about online social marketing campaigns to recruiting new members. Take a look at our experiment!

1) We set-up an official Facebook page

2) We linked the page to a ConstantContact social campaign that unlocked information about MemberWise in return for a 'Like'.

3) We maximised awareness via a secondary pay-per-click Facebook advert campaign linked to interests including 'charity' and 'association'.

Messaging: We asked Facebook users to 'Like' our official page and in return we outlined how we could help. Following each 'Like' the 'app' unlocked an overview of key subscriber benefits linked to the following actions - Join/Visit/Participate.

Cost: �18.50 in Facebook adverts & zero ConstantContact fees as conducted as part of a trial. Time taken to launch: 30 minutes.

Result: 54 'Likes' and & 15 new MemberWise subscribers in 7 days.

Conclusion: Our free-to-join proposition may have positively impacted on the number of 'Likes'(i.e. it's free so why the hell not!) and a key issue is that membership professionals may not add related words to their Facebook profiles.

A killer question to ask yourself is 'Would prospective members add key words related to either their interest (or your offering) on Facebook
? E.g. Would an achitect add 'Architcture'? Would an Accountant add 'Accounts'.

Recommendation: You can establish your potential recipient population within the Facebook advert tool before launching an advert campaign. We recommend 'have a play!' first.

2012 - Year in review

This year we welcomed our 1,250th subscriber and conducted a range of 'best practice' activities. We highlight our key activities below...

- Recruiting & Retaining Members conference & survey - Over 100 membership organisations and associations took part. Over 90% of attendees agreed knowledge gained would help them to develop and grow. Access survey our results via our handy Info Graphic.

- MAP competency framework - Over 30 membership and association professionals attended our MAP focus group (hosted by TAF)  and in late October this work was formally endorsed by the Heseltine Review. Find out more...

-MemberWise Legal 'Lunch and Learn' series -  We held 3 seminars in association with Bates Wells and Braithwaite (BWB) LLP. We provided the topics, you voted on your top 3, and BWB delivered 3 great sessions that attracted over 150 membership organisation and association professionals.

- Getting to Grips with Direct Debits seminar - Clear Academy delivered a dedicated 'hands on' session in November. The session was well attended and delivered significant value. 


- New website - In April we launched our new website that now contains a dedicated  information and advice section, comprehensive online supplier directory, events listings, eUpdate archive, research results section, and our great new vacancy service. Visitor numbers have increased to over 1,500 pcm. Take a look...

- Harnessing the web conference - Our largest conference yet. We welcomed over 200 delegates, facilitated 21 good practice sessions and over 315 membership organisations and associations completed our survey. Delegate feedback was positive and 96% advised they would attend another similar event in 2013.


So what's happening 2013? We are planning a number of national conferences and the next Direct Debit training day is already scheduled (23 May). We hope to deliver more 'Lunch and Learns' and will release the results from our Harnessing the Web' survey (sponsored by IndigoBlue) early in the New Year. More info to follow!

MAP Toolkit (c) Update

In November we announced the endorsement of the Membership and Association Professional (MAP) � Toolkit by the UK Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (via the recent Heseltine Review).
Membership & Association Professional Resource
This month we resume user-testing of the competence framework element with 4 leading membership organisations and associations to confirm usability and measurable impacts within our sector.

The toolkit is unique as it is the only resource of its kind to be formally endorsed by central government and quality assured in partnership with the Trade Association Forum (TAF). 

Being based on competence ranges, it will assist in defining agreed best practice for professional development rather than sometimes random or traditional input based (e.g. points/hours) CPD schemes.

Direct Debit training day feedback

Clear Academy and the MemberWise Network were proud to deliver the first joint Direct Debit Training Course, exclusively aimed at membership and association professionals.

This one day course focused on how to get the most from an efficient and compliant Direct Debit scheme, with specific emphasis on:

- Ensuring new members could sign-up quickly and efficiently
- Maximising member retention with simple and flexible collections
- Saving time and money with a streamlined process
- Reducing the possibility of unpaid fees/failed collections and indemnity claims

The day itself was both productive and fun.  Attendees agreed they would be happy to recommend the course to others, felt more confident about Direct Debits and would make changes to their DD set-up as a result of attending the course.

Comments from attendees representing organisations including the Institute of Directors (IoD), National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) and Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) can be viewed on our website.
