From September 8-17th, Redwood City Together continued the annual tradition of planning inclusive community events during Welcoming Week. Welcoming Week is a part of a nationwide movement where organizations and communities work to bring together community members of all backgrounds to build strong connections and affirm the importance of inclusive environments. This year, local Welcoming Week events included a "Know Your Rights" immigration workshop, a Parent Café open to all parents and caregivers in Redwood City and North Fair Oaks, and multiple celebrations of two pioneers of welcoming in the community, Roberto 'Tito' Alvarez and United through Education (Familias Unidas).
The Redwood City Public Library hosted several fun, family-friendly events as well, including multiple Welcoming Week Storytimes and Build-Your-Own Welcoming Week Yard Sign workshops. The San Mateo County Office of Community Affairs also hosted a variety of events, including an engaging film screening of The Donut King and multiple park celebrations with resources and games for all to enjoy. Redwood City Together had the privilege of interacting with over 300 community members in our Welcoming Week outreach, in addition to the other over one thousand community members who participated in the other Welcoming Week events across San Mateo County.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the staff at the Redwood City Public Library, the San Mateo County Office of Community Affairs, El Concilio of San Mateo County, Immigration Institute of the Bay Area, LIBRE, Thrive Alliance, and the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County for making this community a welcoming space for everyone, as well as the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative for their staff, venue, and generous grant that helped make Welcoming Week possible.
