October 2020
We hope you enjoy this month's highlights of our impact and mission in action!
Dear Friend,

Autumn at the Club is always special: the kids are back with us to get their homework done, to renew their friendships, and relish the joys of childhood.  As the leaves turn and the weather cools, we are excited for our upcoming Halloween, Thanksgiving and year-end holiday celebrations.

Of course, as we have for the past eight months, we will modify our events to protect the health and safety of our children and staff...but rest assured, our Halloween happenings will be just as “spooktacular,”our holiday feasts will be just as delicious, and our sense of family and community will be stronger than ever.

Fall is also the time when we look to build resources for the year ahead, especially through our annual fund campaign. As we begin to wind down 2020, we understand that our world will be different for some time to come. But we also recognize that kids in our community still need a safe place to be kids when school is out and when their parents are at work; they still need a space for our hands-on, experiential programs; and they still need the emotional support and encouragement of our professional staff.

At a time when everything seems unpredictable, the Club is a constant for our kids. As friends, parents, and supporters, I would ask that if you have the means or are inclined, please consider a gift to our Annual Fund.  As you may know, our annual fund provides general support for the Club and is critical to our ability to serve kids in the community without interruption, no matter what comes our way. Big or small, every gift brightens a future and monthly giving is especially appreciated.

Thank you for all you do!

Gratefully,

Interactive FUN-damentals
Making Learning Fun

Experiential learning is just more fun! With some of our area schools operating in hybrid or modified formats, many children are spending significant time trying to learn sitting at a computer screen in a remote environment. At the Club, we know that “Zoom Time” can turn into “Zoned Out” time, so we are taking every opportunity to give kids the chance to benefit from in-person and interactive learning experiences at our after-school programs.

Out of the City Club Goes Out to Sea!
Fishing for independence and new skills

Part of the joy of being a teenager is that one’s sense of growing curiosity starts to align with one’s ability to become more independent. At the Club, we recognize that as young people move toward adulthood, they benefit from new experiences that help them develop skills, confidence, and autonomy.

This fall, our "City Club" has transformed into an “Out of City” Club... and our first trip was out to sea for a fun fishing expedition!

Calling All Alumni!
Tales of Inspiration

In its 70 years, Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club has been the place where thousands of kids create wonderful childhood memories and build friendships that last a lifetime. This year, we are making a concerted effort to reconnect with our alumni – both those who still live locally and those who have moved to other parts of the country or world.

If you are an alum and have a memory or story to share, please visit Click Here.

In the meantime... here’s some inspiration!
Seth Watkins is not only an alum who cherished the Club’s “Canadian Camp,” he has also become one of the Club’s most beloved staff members. Seth has taken the skills he learned as a Club Kid, along with his memories, and turned it into his career, working with youth every day.  In fact, “Science with Seth” is one of our most popular programs.

Recently Seth led seven of our kids to the Shu Swamp Nature Preserve Park. This outing not only featured fresh air and a beautiful setting, but the perfect outdoor lab to learn about biology. The kids had the chance to see and learn about different animals, trees, and the overall ecosystem of the preserve. Among the highlights of the day were holding frogs and climbing trees!
