WellBeingU Champions honored for dedication to campus well-being

Three members of the Cal State LA community received WellBeingU Champion awards for demonstrating extraordinary and innovative dedication to the well-being of others at Cal State LA. The three honorees were Sociology/Latin American Studies Professor Gabriela Fried Amilivia, Assistant Athletic Trainer Alyssa Vaniman, and student Javier Valencia. They were recognized for their contributions toward creating a culture of well-being at Cal State LA during an April 25 WellBeingU Speaker Series event that featured Dr. Carrie Hastings, mental health clinician for the Los Angeles Rams, and L.A. Rams wide receiver Lance McCutcheon. Amilivia, Vaniman, and Valencia are pictured above with President William A. Covino and First Lady Debbie Covino.

Cal State LA presents the Pérez-Silverman Symposium

The Pérez-Silverman Symposium on Urban Ecology, Sustainability & Environmental Justice will take place on Thursday, May 4, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Luckman Theatre as well as online via Zoom. The keynote speaker is Julian Agyeman, author of Introducing Just Sustainabilities: Policy, Planning, and Practice and chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University. Register online by May 1 to attend the symposium.

COVID-19 booster clinic planned for May 4

Cal State LA and AltaMed are hosting a free COVID-19 booster clinic on campus on Thursday, May 4. The pop-up clinic will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. outside of University Library North near the Main Walkway. Updated booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be available. The clinic will offer Pfizer bivalent boosters for ages 12 and older and Moderna bivalent boosters for ages 6 and older. Appointments are recommended, but not required. Please use the links below to make appointments for the clinic. Use the dropdown to select your desired vaccine dose, then select May 4 on the calendar, and choose your desired appointment time.

Silverman Gallery to display senior projects

Cal State LA will present the 2023 Spring Senior Project Exhibition from May 1 through May 11 at the University's Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery in the Fine Arts building. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m. The opening reception will be held on Friday, May 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. For details, call (323) 343-4040.

College expo to showcase senior designs

This year's Capstone Senior Design Expo will feature dozens of innovative projects created by students in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology. It will be held on Friday, May 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Golden Eagle Ballrooms, University-Student Union (Pasadena Room), and Music 149. Poster sessions will also occur at the Engineering & Technology Courtyard. The student projects are sponsored by corporate and University partners. For more information, call (323) 343-4500.

The Luckman features a performance by Indigo Girls

American folk-rock duo Indigo Girls will appear at Cal State LA on Saturday, June 24, at 8 p.m., in the Luckman Theatre. The one-night performance is presented by The Soraya at Cal State Northridge. Cal State LA students, faculty, and staff can purchase discounted tickets at the Luckman Box Office upon presentation of a valid Cal State LA One Card. In Memoriam

Richard Kao, emeritus professor of marketing in the College of Business and Economics, passed away on April 3, 2023. A Cal State LA faculty for 29 years, Kao served as acting chair and chair for the Department of Marketing and numerous committees at all levels in the University. He founded the Marketing Club for the marketing student organization and served as their faculty adviser. A celebration of life ceremony was held on Saturday, April 22, at Ambassador Church in Anaheim.


Howard Rosen, emeritus professor of biology in the College of Natural and Social Sciences, passed away on March 24, 2023. A Cal State LA faculty for more than three decades, Rosen has taught and conducted research in the area of genetics. A celebration of life ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 7, at Elysian Park.
