Wellesley Books Newsletter | October 28th, 2020
The cold weather rolled in this week, the trees are bare in front of the store, and the American flags are out for Election Day! Since we won't be spending long hours outside until the spring, our gift department has stocked up on board games. We have the classics like Yahtzee, Parcheesi, Scrabble, Catan, and Carcassonne to newer games like Dixit, Mysterium, Game of Thrones: the Trivia Game, and Klask: an Epic Magnetic Battle. We've also received a new shipment of puzzles—more of your favorite White Mountain designs, and new stock from Lantern Press. Check out the photo above for some examples or visit our front window on Central Street. Remember, stock up and shop early!

Bookseller Recommendations
Sally recommends:
Memorial by Bryan Washington
Bryan Washington, the author of the acclaimed short story collection Lot, has brought us an exquisite novel about a multicultural, gay couple living together in Houston. Mike, a chef, is Japanese and travels back to Osaka to spend the last months with his dying father. Benson, who is Black, and a teacher to problem youth, is left in their apartment with Mike’s mother who has come to visit just as her son leaves. Issues of love, acceptance, and abandonment - between mothers and sons, and fathers and sons trying to find some common ground, are told in beautiful, yet simple prose. This is one brilliant novel.

Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark
If you’re in the mood to read something that’s spooky and strange, can handle body horror, and could use a little more Black girl magic in your life, then Ring Shout by P. Djéli Clark is exactly what you’re looking for. It is non-stop action and Clark doesn’t shy away from the terrifying history and nature of racism. It’s magical, full of complex and instantly likable characters, prescient, and a story that’ll make you feel like you’ve been punched square in the chest in the best way possible.

Bookseller Recommendations for Young Readers
Jess recommends:
Saoirse doesn't believe in happy endings or romantic comedies. To escape a mundane night after finals, she goes to a party at her nemesis' house where she meets Ruby, but Saoirse sees no point in getting closer because she's leaving for Oxford in the fall and she might just have the early onset dementia gene that has her mother living in a nursing home. It's clear, though, that they like each other and Ruby suggests a romantic comedy checklist. Once everything is checked off they can go their separate ways—but is it possible to not fall in love?

The Last Halloween by Abby Howard
I’m thrilled that this story, which began as a webcomic, will be published in book form! It’s the perfect choice for graphic novel fans looking for a spooky October read. Yes, it is a bit more gory than I would normally like, but Howard’s endearing characters, enthralling story, and atmospheric, expertly rendered illustrations make this a real gem. It’s no surprise it has starred reviews from Kirkus, Booklist, Publishers Weekly, and School Library Journal.
A Child's Library is a subscription service for children ages 0-5 (or anyone who loves picture books)! Each month, our children's book buyer, Lauren, will select one newly released picture book to be sent or picked-up from the store. The purpose of A Child's Library is to help foster a love for books within the child's home. It makes a great baby shower gift or holiday gift!

The October 2020 pick is Bye, Penguin! by Seou Lee. To find out more about our subscription service, click here.
