Wellesley Books Newsletter
December 18th, 2019
|
Our last electronic missive of 2019 finds us in the thick of our two busiest weeks of the year. The lines are moving, the wrapping paper's flying, and the stacks are forever shrinking, only to be replenished by new boxes of books hot off the delivery trucks. The weather outside may be frightful, but your perseverance and good cheer in the face of the rain, sleet and snow have been pretty delightful. If you've been hunkered down inside for the past couple of weeks, we have an expanded selection of hardcover novels and nonfiction at the front of the store, as well as several tables loaded with appealing gift books, to make the search for that last-minute gift as easy as possible. Happy holidays and best wishes from all of us for a joyful New Year--we'll see you in 2020!

Beginning in 2015, James Patterson has awarded annual holiday bonuses to independent booksellers in recognition of all that they contribute to their communities (and their many hard-working hours of shelving, ringing, and recommending). This year, bookseller extraordinaire Cassie Duncanson was honored with a 2019 Holiday Bonus. In addition to being a do-it-all dynamo, Cassie runs our Teen Writer's Workshop. If you've asked for a YA or science fiction/fantasy suggestion in 2019, chances are you've talked to Cassie--and come away with a killer stack of books. Congratulate her the next time you see her in the store!

This book is incredible and it's no wonder
The Yellow House won the National Book Award this year. Sarah M. Broom is not handing over the tourist's New Orleans. Here is New Orleans East, built on a swamp between the Mississippi, the new Mississippi, and a canal. Here in the past is the Yellow House and, here in the present is Broom's older brother, Carl, who spends his evenings near the concrete slab which was once the Yellow House. In-between is the story of a family, the politics of land and race, and the fight for recognition.

If you need silly, maybe even irreverent stocking stuffers, we're your go-to shop. (Wouldn't that Tom Brady candle make a great gift for your New York relatives?)

What We're Reading Now...
|
|
For over half a year, we've been partnering with the Prison Book Program to send books to people in prison. Thanks to your generosity, we've filled five large boxes and counting! We've added some new books in different genres for the holidays; please check out our expanded wishlist here.

Tallulah
Tallulah is a very bad dog. (We're allowed to say this because she lives with assistant manager Jess.) Good thing she's cute. She's 11 years old and currently awaiting the results of her DNA test. When she's not trying to eat paper, she enjoys walks to the bookstore, frolicking on the shores of Morses Pond and making new human friends.
