Healthy Holiday Challenge 2018
Mon 11/5 - Fri 12/14 | 6-week program

Give yourself the gift of healthier habits this year with the Healthy Holiday Challenge. This 6-week program begins in early November and ends just before the holiday break in December to support you with small, healthy steps to build on each week. You will receive a weekly newsletter with a different step each 
week, and tools for support and motivation, including weekly prize 
drawings and a grand prize.

Healthy Department Certification
Applications open October 1 - November 30

The Be Well at Work Healthy Department Certification program is dedicated to creating a sustainable healthy workplace community where faculty and staff are more engaged, energized and empowered to lead a healthy lifestyle and prevent injury and illness at work. 

Any department, office, unit, academic or other administrative unit of 10 or more members comprising of faculty, staff, and/or students can apply for the certification beginning  O ctober 1, 2018. Earning a Healthy Department Certification demonstrates a commitment to fostering a culture of emotional, physical, social, spiritual and occupational well-being and can help to create a more inclusive, productive and cohesive work environment.

Creativity and Your Health

Engaging in creative activities as part of or outside of our work allows us to be more productive, balanced, and calm in everyday life. Come explore your creativity through simple, guided exercises, and learn how engaging in creative activities can: 
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Decrease stress
  • Improve your immune system
  • Increase your ability to be more productive at work and at home
This beginner workshop will introduce various creative outlets suitable for taking a break in your work day such as doodling with intention, coloring, and collage. Any level of experience with art or other creative modality is welcome. Supplies will be provided.

Yoga for Stress and Tension Relief

Practicing yoga can release tension in your joints, give you greater range of movement, soothe your back, and grant you increased comfort in all aspects of your life. Learn how pranayama breathing can enhance your practice and help liberate your mind in surprising ways. Bring your own yoga mat if you have one, limited number of mats provided. Comfortable clothing and bare feet recommended. 

Resistance Band Exercises

Limited on time, space and equipment? Fitting physical activity into your workday can make a difference in your cardiovascular health, muscular strength, endurance, and joint mobility. Learn how to maximize your office space and get the most out of a 10 minute exercise break with body weight and resistance band exercises. Resistance bands will be provided. Comfortable clothing and athletic shoes recommended.

Breastfeeding Your Baby and Returning to Work or School Class
Wed 10/17 | 1-4:15pm | Tang Ed Center, Section Club |  Instructor: Tina Benitez, IBCLC, Certified Lactation Consultant
This 3 hour class is broken up into two parts.  The first portion of the class, 1-3pm, addresses breastfeeding basics and problem solving. The second portion of class, 3:15-4:15pm, covers returning-to-work planning and breast pumps. Those who have already attended a breastfeeding class are welcome to join the last portion of the class.

Personal HygieniKits (compatible with our lactation room hospital grade pumps) are available and sold at our cost plus tax, or apply for a no-cost kit (limited supply that is based on financial need).

Nutrition Workshop: Fall Veggies

Temptations are everywhere during the holiday season. In this class, you will learn to cook vegetable dishes so flavorful that they may outshine your favorite holiday dessert! These clever and creative recipes will have your whole family asking for seconds. Presentation, demonstration, sample and recipes provided.  
Recipe of the Month

The same seeds you used as a child to grow a chia pet can also be used to make a fun snack or breakfast! Chia seeds provide fiber, protein, omega-3 fats, and several minerals. Mix them with milk or a milk alternative and refrigerate overnight. Add toppings such as fruit, nuts, or nut butter. Just grab it out of the fridge on your way to work. Do a quick search of chia pudding online and you'll find endless flavor possibilities.

First Annual Staff Appreciation Scavenger Hunt
Mon 10/29 - Thu 11/1

Staff are invited to participate in a Staff Appreciation Week Scavenger Hunt event, explore and re-discover the beauty of our UC Berkeley campus, while learning some historical fun facts along the way.   

Participants will have the opportunity to participate as an individual or team (fewer than 10) and have a chance to win group or individuals prizes during the Scavenger Hunt "Reveal" Party on Thursday, November 1 from 12:10 - 1:00 pm at the Campanile Esplanade.

October is Cancer Awareness Month
