Fats and oils add a lot of flavour to food, and they help us absorb some nutrients. But diets higher in unhealthy fats (saturated and trans fats) are also linked to health risks such as heart disease. Below are some tips to help you get enough good fats in your diet and limit unhealthier ones:
Flavour your salad with balsamic and or other vinegars, fresh lemon juice, herbs and spices instead of a store bought dressing
Add mashed avocado to sandwiches instead of butter or mayonnaise
For dipping make your own hummus instead of spinach or artichoke dip
Use canola or olive oil instead of butter for stir-frying or sautéing
Eat a small handful of almonds or walnuts with a piece of fruit for a simple snack instead of chips or pretzels
