Taking care of mental health is important, too


Mental health is best thought of as the way a young person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors affect his or her life. Mental health is a spectrum. In the same way that every individual experiences physical health as anywhere from ‘well’ to ‘ill, every individual has a mental health experience. As with physical health, mental health changes at different points in individuals’ lives based on both biological and environmental factors. Many young people enjoy mental wellness, meaning that they have positive regard for themselves, enjoy positive relationships with the people who are important to them, and are generally resilient when faced with challenges in their lives at home and school. Below are some things to consider when balancing school, life, and everything in between:


  • Try a relaxing activity. Explore relaxation or wellness programs or apps, which may incorporate meditation, muscle relaxation, or breathing exercises. Schedule regular times for these and other healthy activities you enjoy such as journaling.
  • Set goals and priorities. Decide what must get done now and what can wait. Learn to say “no” to new tasks if you start to feel like you’re taking on too much. 
  • Focus on positivity. Identify and challenge your negative and unhelpful thoughts.
  • Stay connected. Reach out to your friends or family members who can provide emotional support and practical help.
