A Note from Sarah
Were you there?
Dear friends,
“Were you there when they crucified my Lord?” That’s the title of an old spiritual often sung during Holy Week. Of course, none of us were there two thousand years ago when Jesus was crucified. But like the spiritual, Holy Week calls us to be there in our souls. During Holy Week, we walk the way of the cross with Jesus. The rich services of this week – Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday – allow us to bear witness to his passion and death on the cross. We contemplate the costly offering Jesus made on the cross, expressed in one of our Eucharistic prayers: “he stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself…a perfect sacrifice for the
whole world.”
And from this offering, resurrection comes. By a love we cannot fathom, God raised Jesus from the dead and unleashed the power of “new and unending life” in him. We will never understand resurrection. Rather, in the words of the poet Wendell Berry, we’re called to practice resurrection.
I invite you to come to the Holy Week and Easter services at Grace, whether in person or online. The Maundy Thursday and Good Friday liturgies are designed to bring us “there,” to the cross. And our Easter Vigil and Easter Day services will be full of signs and songs of resurrection.
I wish you a blessed Holy Week and a joyous Easter!
May you know God’s peace today.
~Sarah

Sarah Away April 6 through April 12
Like many clergy, my contract includes time off the week after Easter, and so I will be away from April 6th through April 12th . I will remain on call if there is a pastoral emergency. Note that I will not be checking my email during that time. On Sunday, April 12th , I’m grateful that Cliff Cutler will be the celebrant and preacher at our 10:00 a.m. service, and Manny Faria will be the celebrant at our 4:00 p.m. service.
