THE WESLEYAN JULY 2022

Letter From the Pastor

Hello John Wesley,

It is real pleasure to be writing this short letter of introduction to all of you. My name is René Perez, and I am your new pastor as of July 1, 2022. As I begin my time and ministry with you, I look forward to the many possibilities God has in store for us, and for the extended community of Falmouth.

I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who has welcomed me and my family so warmly. Thank you for the cards, the calls, the gift cards, the emails, the meals, the in-person introductions, and the many other ways through which you have welcomed us to our new home in Falmouth, and to this loving community of faith. We truly feel the love and welcoming spirit of this congregation. I also want to say thank you to Mark and Colleen Karsner, Matt and Kit O’Connor, other members of the SPRMT, TLT and staff, who have been guiding us and welcoming us since day 1. “Thank you.” A special thanks to Pastor Rebecca Mincieli, for her formidable leadership, her commitment to John Wesley, and for the time she took to update me on things pertaining to the life of this congregation.

As you may or may not know, I served the Trinity UM congregation in Springfield, MA from 2019 until last month, right after leaving my 8-year appointment as district superintendent of the Central MA district. Prior to that, I served the Lititz UM church in Lancaster County, PA. In 2000, I was also appointed to serve as Director of Church Multiplication and Ethnic and Latino ministries in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, and earlier on, together with my wife Wanda, we both served as co-pastors for 8 years in Philadelphia, PA.

Wanda and I have three amazing kids, Kayla, Isaias and Ezekiel. After college, Kayla got married and now lives in Charlton, MA with her husband Nate. Isaias, our middle child, graduated from the Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in NYC and hopes to become an actor. Ezekiel, the youngest, graduated from college this year, and now lives in Ithaca, NY. Last but not least, we have a dog named Jasper, who is about 12 years old.

I look forward to getting to know each of you, and growing together in our faith in Christ.

Pastor René

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Sunday School:

We are so excited to announce that Sunday School will be continuing throughout the Summer! Each Sunday, children entering Kindergarten through 4th grade are invited to the beginning part of the worship service with their families. After the children's moment, we exit to the education wing to Sunday School. Each week, there is a lesson and relevant games and activities.

High School Mission Trip:

On Sunday, July 3rd, 9 high school youth and 2 adult chaperones are headed to Niagara falls for a week for their summer mission trip! Throughout our trip, we will be working on construction projects as well as community outreach activities. We will be partnering with other churches and of course we will get to do a little bit of exploring! Please keep these youth and adults in your prayers!

Middle School Mission Trip:

The last week of July our middle schoolers are heading to Camp Mechuwana in Maine for their summer mission trip! They will be there for 3 nights and 4 days and will be serving the camp through outreach projects and light cabin repairs. Please keep these youth in your prayers as we prepare for this trip!

Car Washes:

To fund our two summer mission trips, we have two more car washes in the month of July! Be sure to stop by the church after the worship service on July 10th and again on Saturday afternoon, July 23rd. Each car is $5 or a donation of your choice and we will also wash boats!

Summer Fundays:

Summer Fundays are back this year and we are so excited to get to be together each Sunday night! These events are for all youth entering 5th grade through just graduated. Each Sunday night from 6:00-8:00pm we have dinner together before a short devotion. Afterwards, we have themed activities! Click here to sign up to make dinner for the youth. Here is a list of the activities for July:

10: Ice Cream Games

17: S'mores

24: Scavenger Hunts

31: Escape Rooms

Tasty Tuesdays:

Most Tuesdays during the summer, all families are invited to grab some cash and meet at a local ice cream spot for fellowship and fun! The location changes each week so be sure to pay attention to the website and announcements! In July, there is only one Tasty Tuesday at Ben & Bills at 3:00pm on July 19th due to Summer Trips and Hannah's personal vacation.

Some of our youth enjoying the obstacle course bounce house during their senior night celebrations!

After the Celebration Sunday service, we enjoyed some Smitty's ice cream!

All of our Sunday School kids loved to play on the bounce house!

Now that you mention it, we will host a Welcome Reception for Pastor René and his family at a Super Coffee Hour (as opposed to a Light Coffee Hour!) on Sunday, July 10th, after the 9:30 service. There is no beach service that day. This will be more a fruit and brunch sort of reception. If you’d like to help, please contact Colleen Karsner at 508-272-5917 or by email at [email protected].

Donation to Belonging to Each Other:

At our last meeting it was brought to our attention that BTEO was trying to raise a certain amount of funds and the funds would be matched until July 1st. We voted unanimously to donate $500 towards this amazing organization.

Falmouth Service Center Food Drive: We will be collecting Tomato and Chicken Noodle Soup for the FSC. They are in desperate need for soups. Collections can be put in the food bin in the Narthex. We plan to collect in July and August and then see if they are still in need.

Falmouth Service Center Fresh Start Backpacks:

We are pleading for our congregation to please bring backpacks that fit children 5th-12th graders They are also looking for monetary donations in order to purchase supplies to fill them. You can always send your donation straight to the Falmouth Service Center or put in the memo of your check to JWUMC Fresh Start Backpack FVS. We will have a bin for backpack collections in the fellowship hall.

Outreach & Missions Committee: If you are interested in becoming more involved in helping other people, please think about joining our committee. We are always excited to have new ideas and more helpers. Our next meeting is Wednesday September 21st at 6:30 PM.

Change the World:

July will be collected for Mercy Ships. You are critically important to making patients’ dreams of healing come true. That’s because life-changing surgeries only happen when caring and generous people like you partner with our organization. Your kindness and generosity fuel everything. Treating painful conditions like Mansare’s and performing other desperately needed surgical interventions are only possible because of you.

Change the World Coin Boxes: There has been a huge decline in coin donations each month due to our change in how we collect money due to COVID. I have thought about some ways to help, and I truly believe this might be a great idea. I have ordered small collection coin boxes and stickers with the new logo. The NEW coin collection boxes will be available to take home and fill with coins for the Change the World missions. This allows people a space to put change in at home, bring the coin bank to church, empty it in the plate, and take home to refill. Please only take one box per household. I’m really hoping this helps the organizations that we choose to contribute to each month.

Change the World: August will be collected for Tommy’s Place. "Tommy's Place" is a dream vacation home for kids fighting cancer. The home is a place to relax, make memories and most importantly have fun! To ensure privacy, one family at a time stays in the home for up to a week - free of charge. The 11 bedroom house has enough space for the immediate family, extended family as well as any friends and caregivers that are all part of the family support system. For these children and their families, one of the most important aspects of dealing with cancer is having a supportive community.

THE NOISE OF CHANGE HAS A HUGE IMPACT AT OUR CHUCRH!!!!!!!!!!!!

We will be wrapping up our collection for I Support the Girls Sunday July 31st. I will be making a delivery in August, so please spread the word about our bra and menstrual product collection. Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all have supported this mission!

Summer Flowers

I feel peace and satisfaction

Spending time with all my flowers:

Geraniums, lilies and phlox

Provide pleasure for many hours.

Columbines and pink bleeding hearts

Still in bloom although it’s July,

Climbing hydrangeas line the fence

To greet people as they pass by.

Hibiscus soon will be in bloom,

Huge blossoms lasting just one day,

Such magnificent creations

Designed in God’s own special way.

Gifts of Nature given to us,

Nothing can equal their beauty

Each one with its unique features

From Nature’s bounty they’re all free.
