West Bridgewater Food Pantry Express Gratitude to Molly Smith and Community

The West Bridgewater Food Pantry extends thanks to Molly Smith for organizing a food drive that brought the pantry's essential items. "Molly organized a food drive for our pantry requesting our most needed items. There was great response and everything donated was so helpful! As the number of clients that require our services increase, so does the need for more food to meet our demand. We are grateful to Molly and our community for this food drive! We were able to stock up on Pasta Sauce, Jelly, Peanut Butter, Cookies/Crackers - and these items are always in demand! Thank you!"

Historical Tidbit: Life in the 1500's

Did you know that the early houses had thatched roofs, thick straw piled high, with no wood underneath.

It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice and bugs) lived in the roof.

When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying 'It's raining cats and dogs.

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

West Bridgewater Police Department Provides Halloween Safety Guide

With Halloween just around the corner, children will soon be out trick-or-treating. The West Bridgewater Police Department has provided a safety guide for the holiday.

*Drivers: drive cautiously on Halloween night. Slow down, remain vigilant, and allow yourself additional time when traveling through neighborhoods.

Children: always be aware of surroundings.

Make sure costumes are well fitted to avoid trips and falls as well as fire-resistant and non toxic.

It is advisable for young children to be accompanied by a parent or guardian, while older children should discuss routes and times with parents. If children are trick-or-treating after dark they are encouraged to wear reflective tape and bring a flashlight. Candy should be inspected before consumption.

For costume and candy safety tips, visit the Food and Drug Administration Website. For driving safety advice, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety.

Climate Can Do:

3 Tips for a Sustainable Halloween

With spooky season underway, it is important to remember how our choices impact the environment around us. According to Duke University, a 2019 study found that discarded Halloween costumes alone generated 2,000 tons of plastic waste each year. Luckily there are many quick and easy tricks to help you cut down your eco-footprint.

Recycle Costumes and Decor

When it comes to Halloween, some things never go out of style. From spiders to skeletons to witch cauldrons -- keep your "old" decor to use again next year and save time, money, and the planet!

You might consider shopping at thrift and consignment shops or try something new and DIY your own costume! The cape from one year's vampire costume might be the finishing touch for next year's superhero. A pillow case can be easily decorated at home and makes a great trick-or-treat bag. Old stockings with runs and pulls can be transformed into spider-webbing. And cardboard boxes can be cut and painted to look like tombstones in your front yard display!

Maximize Pumpkin Usage

When pumpkins are tossed in the trash and begin to breakdown, they create methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. To help prevent this, try to use every part of your pumpkin this Halloween!

Pumpkin seeds, flesh, and rind can be used in a ton of delicious recipes such as pumpkin bread, pudding, pie, and more. For inspiration, you can look online or visit Delish.

Once the season's over, compost your pumpkin, mixing it oxygen while it breaks down decreases methane emissions and improves your garden's nutrient-rich soil.

Shop Sustainably

Shopping locally is also an easy way to limit waste. Support local farmers this season and buy locally-grown pumpkins; and shop local or fair trade chocolatiers.

West Bridgewater Middle/Senior High School (MSHS) received a National Banner recognition from Special Olympics North America for its dedication to inclusion, advocacy, and respect.

MSHS is one of only 19 schools in Massachusetts, 202 in the country, for the 2023-2024 school year to be awarded this from the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® program, which aims to create social inclusion through intentional planning and implementation of activities across K–12 schools and college campuses.

Superintendent Mark Bodwell commended the efforts of the school, noting their efforts. “We are so proud of the hard work and dedication of our students, coaches, and administrators, who have done such an amazing job and should be so proud of this accomplishment.” ( read full Press Release on wbridgewaterschools.org )

A key component of the program is Unified Sports®, where students with and without disabilities train and compete with one another. MSHS’ implementation of this has set the standard for schools in Massachusetts and in the nation. The Unified Bocce Tournament is a prime example

"The Unified Bocce Team completed their first ever season last week by hosting a Bocce Tournament at the Middle-Senior High School with help from Special Olympics and many high school volunteers. The tournament began with seventh grader Adri Guardione reading the Athlete's Oath and helping representatives from Special Olympics introduce the teams. Competitors included athletes from Pembroke, Bourne, Dartmouth, Plymouth, and Foxboro. Athletes Adri Guardione, Zachary Folger, Joseph Dangoia, Thomas Dubois, Mekenna Clark, Ryan Callahan, Elijah Pereira, and Xavier Popotte showed great teamwork and represented the Wildcats well playing through multiple rounds of 10 minute matches against their opponents. Joseph Dangoia, Adri Guardione, and Zachary Folger were top scorers in the matches they participated in and helped lead the Wildcats to multiple victories during the tournament! Thank you to Coaches Nikki Maloney and Jennie Keeley as well as Ms. Hammel, Trainer Emma and Mr. Campagna for helping to set up!

Earlier this year in their first ever season of Unified Bocce, Wildcat athletes from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade played two matches against students from Pembroke Community Middle School! Join us for our upcoming event on Tuesday, November 7 at the Middle-Senior High School gymnasium and cheer on our team as they take on students from surrounding communities in a tournament from 3:30-5pm!"

Adventure

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

“The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.”

~ Oprah Winfrey

“One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive..." ~ Edward Abbey

Everyday I work to make the BuzzAround better... and everyday I take moments to enjoy, to breathe the air, to swirl in a dance, or visually absorb the color of a leaf. It has been challenging and wonderful; life as a half-hearted fanatic~ Jacquie
