Art for a Good Cause: The Empty Bowls Project

“We were contacted by Erin Massa, Art Teacher, WBMSHS about a wonderful and creative fundraiser for our food pantry called the Empty Bowls Project. Students create handcrafted ceramic bowls to raise awareness about hunger. During the school event, guests were able to purchase a bowl with all proceeds going to the WB Food Pantry. We are pleased to report that every single bowl was purchased! Pantry board members attended the event and it was absolutely amazing to see all the talent and generosity in our community! Thank you to the Art department, students, and families that participated. We are thankful!”

From Vital Records of West Bridgewater

The town of West Bridgewater, Plymouth County, was established February 16, 1822, from a part of Bridgewater.

"Vital Records of West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, to the year 1850" was published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society at the charge of the Eddy Town-Record Fund in 1911. It lists birth, marriage, and death records for the town of West Bridgewater prior to 1850. It also provides U.S. Census Populations from 1820 to 1910. The population increased almost 20% between 1850 and 1855 - wow!

Climate Can-Do: Simple Kitchen Swaps

We use plastic every day, most of the time without thinking about it. But scientists have discovered tiny, toxic, pollutants called microplastics all around the world. From Antarctica to the oceans, and even our own tap water. These tiny particles are a result of excessive plastic consumption and pollution. Here are simple switches we can make in our daily lives to decrease our contact with these toxic microplastics– and it all starts in the kitchen.

  • Switch to bamboo or wood cutting boards. The plastic cutting boards we use to cut up our fruits and vegetables can scratch off tiny bits of plastic that stick to our food and are then consumed. Wood or bamboo is a better alternative and can even keep your knives sharper for longer!
  • Use glass food storage containers. The plastic food containers we use to store leftovers get a lot of wear and tear. Over time this erosion can cause an increased amount of microplastics in our food. Alternatives like glass or pyrex are more long lasting and microplastic free!
  • Don’t put plastic in the dishwasher. Even though we can make some switches, it’s unrealistic to get rid of all the plastic in our houses. However, the plastic we have left, like bottles or containers, can be washed by hand. The high temperatures of the dishwasher degrade the plastic over time.

Glass, pyrex, wood, bamboo are all great alternatives, but it’s nearly impossible to avoid plastic–and that’s ok. We can’t be perfect consumers nor should we have to. Making these simple switches can help not only protect you, but the world around you too! While the idea of microplastics can be scary, there is still a lot of research being done and much to learn about its effects. Scientists suggest a balanced diet, exercise, and plenty of sleep is always a sure fire way of having a healthy lifestyle even if there are unhealthy practices in our world that are out of our control.

West Bridgewater Police Department Recognizes National Mental Health Month

“National Mental Health Month, observed each May, promotes mental wellness through an annual theme. Mental Health America’s theme for 2025 is “Turn Awareness into Action.” This initiative encourages people to recognize the strides that have been made in decreasing the stigma around mental health, while also working to transform this understanding into actions to create change. According to Mental Health America, nearly one in five American adults will have a diagnosable mental health condition each year, and 46% of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lifetime. 54.7% of these adults will not receive any mental health treatment. The initiative aims to educate people on the importance of taking action regarding mental health, both for oneself and in the form of helping others. Ways to participate include taking a mental health screening or getting certified in Mental Health First Aid to assist someone in a mental health crisis.”

Buying Local Makes Cents!

Buying local stimulates the economy close to home, helps benefit local schools and charities — and helps the environment.

Buying Local Keeps Money in Our Hives.

When you buy locally, the small business benefits. When they do well, they are more likely to hire more people, who then spend more money in the community. There's an increase in local tax base, boosting funds available for libraries, schools, police, fire and infrastructure. Local businesses also donate to local charities, helping make improvements that all can enjoy.

Buying Local Is Better for the Environment

*Less trucking and shipping (less gas use.)

*Less packaging.

*With locally grown food: better taste; more vitamins.

Buying Local Results in More Diverse Choices

From local artisans to boutique and resale shops~ let your originality shine! Don't see something you need? Ask the store owner to stock it for you : )

By supporting local businesses, we can also help entrepreneurship thrive, which adds to local prosperity and innovation. Local retailers are our neighbors who have taken the financial risk to try to make our region a better, stronger place; boosting the economy and helping lift friends and neighbors economically.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose.” ~ Dr. Seuss

Love your local. Buy & live local: where we live is where we have the most influence and can create real change. Make it happen at home. Share your local love. ~ Jacquie
