| | Historical Tidbit: John Cary | |
John Cary was born in December, 1610 near Bristol, Somersetshire, England. He was the first Cary to come to America, joining the Plymouth colony in 1634. John is said to have been the first Latin School teacher in the Plymouth Colony. In 1639 he settled in Duxbury, where he had a farm, but was one of the first to move from Duxbury to Bridgewater. He married Elizabeth Godfrey in June, 1644 and had 12 children, six boys and six girls. His house was a quarter of a mile east of the meeting house in West Bridgewater.
John was one of the proprietors of Bridgewater and one of the first settlers when the town was incorporated in 1656. He was the Constable of Bridgewater (1656), the 1st Town Clerk of Bridgewater (1657-1681) and was also a Selectman (1667-1679). John Cary was among the most respectable of the first settlers and his family one of the most influential in the town. He died on October 31, 1681, in Bridgewater, Plymouth Colony.
Monument to John Cary erected on/near his homestead in West Bridgewater, in 1905 by a group of his descendants.

Bridging the Bridgewaters Land & Water Trail
Working Group
The next Old State Farm Trail and Tri-town Bridging the Bridgewaters Stewards meeting
Mon June 9, 2025
5-6p at BSU, Science Building, room 285
"The collaboration that formed during the Old State Farm Trail project has evolved into the tri-town land & water trails, Bridging the Bridgewaters Stewards group. Bridging the Bridgewaters (BTBS) embraces the three Bridgewater communities' open space planning and promotes appropriate management and protection of common resource values: Agriculture, Ecology, Biodiversity, Forestry, Fisheries, History, and Recreation. We encourage user-friendly access to recreation trails for hiking, biking, and paddling, as Outdoor Classrooms, and as an economic enhancement.
We also encourage the public to become familiar with the AMC/Bay Circuit Trail and the work of the National Park Service's Wild & Scenic Taunton River Stewardship Council (tauntonriver.org). Our tri-town Bridging the Bridgewaters blue-green trail network connects the AMC / BCT from Plum Island on the North Shore to the Wild & Scenic Taunton River Trail and Fall River on the South Coast!"
This one-hour meeting will be an update regarding ongoing land & water trail projects in the 3 Bridgewater towns, and also a sharing
of goals for related summer projects. All are welcome to attend; for more information, please contact Kitty Doherty at 508-697-2358.
NRTB and the BSU Geography Department host these meetings.

Climate Can-Do: Simple Kitchen Swaps
We use plastic every day, most of the time without thinking about it. But scientists have discovered tiny, toxic pollutants called microplastics all around the world. From Antarctica to the oceans, and even our own tap water. These tiny particles are a result of excessive plastic consumption and pollution. Here are simple switches we can make in our daily lives to decrease our contact with these toxic microplastics– and it all starts in the kitchen.
- Switch to bamboo or wood cutting boards. The plastic cutting boards we use to cut up our fruits and vegetables can scratch off tiny bits of plastic that stick to our food and are then consumed. Wood or bamboo is a better alternative and can even keep your knives sharper for longer!
- Use glass food storage containers. The plastic food containers we use to store leftovers get a lot of wear and tear. Over time this erosion can cause an increased amount of microplastics in our food. Alternatives like glass or pyrex are more long lasting and microplastic free!
- Don’t put plastic in the dishwasher. Even though we can make some switches, it’s unrealistic to get rid of all the plastic in our houses. However, the plastic we have left, like bottles or containers, can be washed by hand. The high temperatures of the dishwasher degrade the plastic over time.
Glass, pyrex, wood, bamboo are all great alternatives, but it’s nearly impossible to avoid plastic–and that’s ok. Making these simple switches can help not only protect you, but the world around you, too! There is still a lot of research being done and much to learn about microplastic effects. Scientists suggest a balanced diet, exercise, and plenty of sleep are always a surefire way of having a healthy lifestyle.

Planting A Seed
“Keep planting new seeds until your mind becomes the earth that gives birth to new worlds.”
