Happy Birthday from the Council on Aging!
The West Bridgewater Council on Aging hosted their "August Babies" celebration in honor of the COA members born this month.
"🎈 We partied like it was 1999 (but with better frosting)! 🎂
Our August Babies celebration at the West Bridgewater COA was bursting with color — balloons, sprinkles, and enough smiles to light every candle on the cake. Lunch was delicious, the slideshow was fun, and yes… the cake disappeared faster than you can say “save me a corner piece!”
Happy Birthday to our August babies — you make every month worth celebrating!"

Historical Tidbit:
New England's Dark Day
"May 19, 1780, was a remarkable dark day, which extended over the eastern states. It commenced in the area early in the morning and continued till the morning of the 20th. The atmosphere here appeared to be filled with a dense smoke, but there was no known cause which could produce such an effect. The grass and leaves appeared to be drenched in a gloomy green. The darkest time of the day was between eleven and two o'clock. Many families found it necessary to light a candle when they ate their dinner. (Noon time meal.) 'In the night it is said there was not a ray of light even of the feeblest class to distinguish an object though ever so near.' The real cause of this darkness has nestled in conjecture to the present day."
~ A recollection from Hilda (Morton) Thomas (1899-1991)
Back in 1780, there was no way to find an explanation as to what was happening because there were no meteorologists. The revolutionary soldiers spent the day in the taverns or churches not sure what was to come. Today, scientists believe that wildfires in Canada caused the darkness due to high amounts of ash particles in the atmosphere. And the next day it had passed, changing like weather in New England always does!

Old Bridgewater Historical Society Open House
Sun, Aug 17
12-3p
199 River St.
The public is invited to an Open House at the Keith Parsonage. The Keith Parsonage was built in 1662 to house the town’s first minister, Rev. James Keith. Today, the home contains many examples of life in Colonial America including a hearth with a bee-hive oven and hand-hewn beams. This last Open House of the summer season will include an informal poetry reading in the adjacent garden, featuring the poetry of the late Faye George, who was a resident of Bridgewater. Poems from her 2016 book, “Voices of King Philip’s War”, will be read by board members and other interested volunteers. 2025 is the 350th anniversary of King Philip’s War. The Keith Parsonage was used as a Garrison for the protection of the town’s inhabitants during those bloody battles in 1665.
While you are there, check out OBHS fundraiser: Sampler Basket of the Bridgewaters. This is a Silent Auction item and includes gift certificates from local businesses including Champion’s Barbershop, D.J. Fowler, Good Days Restaurant, Lawadessa Restaurant, Market Basket, Nail & Spa Club, South Shore Cinema, Tom & Jimmy’s Ice Cream; bracelets donated by Michael H. Jewelers; “Cats Meow” decorative blocks (Keith House and Bridgewater's Academy Building, local history books; and a handcrafted model ship-(The Hawkins). This is an ongoing fundraiser and bids will be taken through the early fall. The parsonage is owned by the Old Bridgewater Historical Society and several of the society’s board of directors will be there on August 17th to conduct tours. Questions? Climate Can-Do:
Pollinator Gardens
We can help bees, butterflies, and birds keep our world in balance with an easy-to-maintain Pollinator Garden.
Pollinators play a vital role in food production, helping to pollinate a significant portion of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we consume. By creating pollinator gardens, we can help reverse the decline in pollinator populations, contributing to both ecological health and food security.
It is important to plant native species, so New England flora should be your focus. To attract bees, it is suggested to plant white snakeroot, bluebells, or American trout-lilies. To attract butterflies, plant New York ironweed, white wood aster, or purplestem angelica. Hummingbirds, as well as the other pollinators, are attracted to spotted crane's bill, butterfly milkweed, bee-balm, and white turtlehead.
Economically speaking, seeds are the better way to go. Plant them a season ahead (Fall or Winter). Already grown plants, though pricey, are easier and faster. Not only are these gardens pretty to look at, it will save you some time with yard work since you don't have to mow!
It does not matter how much land you have available, whether it is a four feet by four feet or a whole field, pollinator gardens bring life and beauty into our world. You can be a part of this journey to better our planet, one plant at a time.

Some like it HOT.
"A woman is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
"Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking."
~ William Butler Yeats
"Be still when you have nothing to say; when genuine passion moves you, say what you've got to say, and say it hot. "
~ D. H. Lawrence
“The thing with heat is, no matter how cold you are, no matter how much you need warmth, it always, eventually, becomes too much.” ~ Victoria Aveyard
“The Bermuda Triangle got tired of warm weather. It moved to Alaska. Now, Santa Claus is missing.” ~ Steven Wright

Slowly my mind wanders, as the heat takes over.
Let me see, I think: "What kind of mischief can I blame on the heat?"
Enjoy your week. ~ Jacquie
