The Boston Post Cane tradition began in 1909, initiated by Edwin A. Grozier, the publisher of the Boston Post newspaper. Grozier distributed 700 gold-headed ebony canes to towns across New England, instructing that they be given to the oldest male resident in each town. The cane would remain in the town, passed down to the next oldest resident upon the previous holder’s death. This tradition was later expanded to include women in 1930.
The canes themselves are a testament to craftsmanship, made from ebony wood with a 14-carat gold head engraved with the town's name and the phrase "Presented by the Boston Post to the oldest citizen of (name of town)—To Be Transmitted." Despite the original newspaper closing in 1957, many towns have preserved this tradition, making the Boston Post Cane a cherished symbol of honor and longevity in New England communities.
In July 2010, West Bridgewater rediscovered their Boston Post Cane in a Town Hall closet after it had been missing for over 25 years! The cane had been unknowingly stowed away during renovations. After finding the cane, the town restarted the tradition, but a replica cane is now used for the ceremony—the original cane remains on display at Town Hall.
The most recent ceremony took place on August 15, 2024, at West Bridgewater Town Hall, where Natalie Beaulieu was honored as the town’s oldest resident. This recognition celebrates not just longevity but also the rich life experiences and contributions of West Bridgewater’s elders.

Climate Can Do: Overconsumption & Sustainable Practices
What Is Overconsumption?
Overconsumption is the excessive consumption or use of something. Without change we could eventually run out, or create more than we can dispose of.
How Can We Help?
Live sustainably, make lifestyle choices that help you and the planet. Small changes make a big impact:
*Walk, bike or take public transportation whenever possible!
*Consider alternatives to single use items:
- A reusable shopping bag.
- Skip the plastic bottles; all sorts of reusable bottles can be found in metal, glass and recycled plastic
- Replace Saran Wrap with wraps made from beeswax, cotton, and tree oil that keep food fresher and can be reused repeatedly
- Use reusable towels instead of paper towels
*Consider eating 2 or 3 meatless dinners / week:
Don’t throw away leftovers; eating leftovers will help you avoid food waste and save you money. Freeze pre-made meals for handy eating later.
*Rather than replacing, repair.
Do not automatically discard broken items when they break. Instead, try repairing it. Using this method can save you money and reduce landfill waste. Repair shops and Youtube Videos are readily available to help you fix things.
*Join Buy Nothing.
With Buy Nothing, you can get rid of unwanted things around your house and get things you need for free. As their motto states “Buy Nothing. Share Everything,” a sustainable living app aimed at the community.
*Shop local.
By shopping locally, you reduce the impact of transportation on the environment and support your local economy.

Thank You Brave Kids Repost from Crystal Tan
"This wonderful and adorable kids are the future to America! they witness an accident outside Crystal Kitchen yesterday, and ran inside to informed us. I brought them lunch, but there were not greedy at all, In fact, they were very responsible and well mannered, after eating, they try to clean up and offer what they have to us. so I told them, no I will not take your money, but I am getting old, in another 10 years. You may need to come and help me work here! lol. and they told (me), you are not old at all! lol although I know that is not the truth, it makes me feel good! I am so proud of these kids. They are so humble, genuine, and well discipline! Love them! Thank you, Elijah, Aiden and JJ." Reposted from Crystal Tan FB Post.

Sisterhood
“Once upon a time there were two sisters. One of them was really, really strong, and one of them wasn't.' You looked at me. 'Your turn.'
I rolled my eyes. 'The strong sister went outside into the rain and realized the reason she was strong was because she was made out of iron, but it was raining and she rusted. The end.'
No, because the sister who wasn't strong went outside into the rain when it was raining, and hugged her really tight until the sun came out again.”
~ Jodi Picoult, Handle with Care
"Women who understand how powerful they are do not give into envy over meaningless things, instead they fight to maintain the beautiful bond of the sisterhood. These are the real women who know that we need each other's love & support to survive in this world. Love is the essence of being a woman. We must be that light of love that seals the bond & unique beauty of our sisterhood." ~ Bindu
